“Chhote Sarkar”(1974) is quite an obscure movie by now, which is a surprise seeing that this movie had Shammi Kapoor and Sadhana in lead roles.
The fact that the movie was released in 1974, by which time both Shammi Kapoor and Sadhana were past their prime as lead actors, may be the reason for the obscurity of this movie. The movie was obviously planned to be released in 1960s, but the movie could not be released for various reasons. By the time it finally saw the light of the day in 1974, it was too late. The taste of the movie goers had changed drastically in the interim period. As a result, this movie sank almost without a trace.

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
This song under discussion is from the film “Birha ki Raat”(1950). Another song I discussed from this film the other day “bahut purdard hai aye sunnewaale”” starts with the sh’er :
jahaan mein jin ki ummeedon ke bede
paar hote hain
woh khush qismat hazaaron mein kahin
do chaar hote hain
‘Beda paar lagaana’ is a saying in hindi/urdu meaning ‘achieving the ambition or reaching ones destination. The word ‘Beda’ literally means a “Fleet of big ships”. The opposite of this saying in a curse “Beda garq ho teraa” or a lament “beda garq hogayaa”. “Garq’ is drowning in water. The special thing about these sayings or muhaavra’s which are used in urdu/hindi, is that they can be used backwards, forwards, in singular/plural,past/present tense, negative/positive and in varied situation they can be applied.
