There have been three movies called “Ziddi” over the years that I am aware of. These movies were released in 1948, 1964 and 1997. “Ziddi” (1948) and “Ziddi” (1964) have some very fine songs and I have posted songs from both these movies in this blog. The 1997 movie of this name is not noted for any great songs, rather this movie is known for a dialogue of Sunni Deol, that went- “ye dhaayi kilo ka haath jab kisi pe uthta hai to wo uthtaa nahin, uth jaata hai” (when this 2 1/2 kilo fist comes down upon someone, he cannot get up, he can only go up). 😉 It is not music for the ears of the baddies, that is for sure.

And as luck would have it, Madan Mohan was the music director of this movie. Seeing his movie bomb at the box office was a fate that Madan Mohan suffered in most of the 92 movies in which he gave music.

I recall this song from my younger days. This has to be the ultimate chaayaageet song. I recall listening to this song emanating from radios late at night after 10 PM and wondering why they had to play such boring songs at that time. And now, when I stumbled upon this song again, I felt like I had discovered a great treasure.

In India, the three unifying things for Indians are Indian Railways, Bollywood movies and Cricket. We have had several rail related songs in Bollywood movies, but it is a great surprise that cricket related songs are conspicuous by their absence, even though cricket is as big a craze among Indians as movies, and it has become more so in the last few decades.
