During the last few weeks, I have started keeping a tab on Radio’ Ceylon’s special programme ‘Puraane Filmon Kaa Sangeet – Kam Sune Ansune Gaane’ which is broadcasted at 7.30 a.m. on Wednesdays. It is in this prograame that I get a chance to listen to some of the rare songs. However, most of the time, I find that such songs have already been covered in the Blog. As I had said in one of my earlier articles, even if there are a few such rare songs in the programme which have not yet been represented in the Blog, I generally like to pick up only those songs which sound melodious to me and have good lyrics. With these backgrounds, nowadays, it is difficult to find rare songs in the programme which I can pick up for the Blog.

SUHAAG (1940) was produced under the banner of CIRCO Productions and it was directed by Balwant Bhatt. The star cast included M Kumar, Bibbo, Mazhar Khan, Ashalata, S Nazir, Ghulam Rasool, P R Joshi, Mehdi Raza etc. The story of the film as culled out from a review which appeared in July 1940 issue of ‘Filmindia’ magazine is as under:

“Jagga Daaku”(1959) was produced by Chimanlal Trivedi and directed by Chandrakant for Chitrabharati, Bombay. This B grade “costume drama” had Jairaj, Jabeen, Chandrashekhar, tiwari, Maruti, Krishna Kumari, Babu Raje, amir Banu, Pt Iqbal, Moni Chatterji, Shapur, Badri Prasad, Bhagwan, baburao Pahalwan, Somaiyya, Dubey, Indira, Premlata, sheila Vaz, Minu Mumtaz etc in it.

JHUMKE (1946), produced under the banner of Chitra Productions was directed by J K Nanda. The main star cast comprised of Akhtar, Gajanan Jagirdar, Satish, Lalita Pawar and G N Bhat. The story of the film was written by Saadat Hasan Manto. I could not get much information about the film. Even the information on the the star cast of the film was sketchy. Luckily, I found a review of the film in one of the issues of ‘Filmindia’ of 1946. A shortened version of the review is set out below:

“Grihlaxmi”(1959) was produced and directed by Raman V Desai for Bombay Movietone, Bombay. The movie had Shahu Modak, Pandhari Bai, Lalita Pawar, Kumari Nazar, Rooplaxmi, Miss Kala, Indira Bansal, Ramavtaar, Raj, Umakant, Pravin Paul, Devendra, Suryakant shukla, Polson, Bhairav, Vipin Gupta etc in it.

“Sati Vaishaalini”(1959) aka “Janam Janam Ka Naata” was a mythological movie with a tale from Markandeya Puraan. It was produced by P N Rangeen and directed by Sadhu Singh for Rati chitra, Bombay. The movie had Trilok Kapoor, Sulochana, lalita Pawar, Ratnamala, Krishna Kumari, Niranjan Sharma, Nand Kishore, Tiwari, Shyam, Hari, Krishna Kumar, Roshanlal etc, with Hiralal, Shiela Kashmiri, Savita Chatterji, Jyoti, Niranjan Tiwari and Kamal Kapoor in guest appearances.

AAG KA DARIYA (1953) was produced and directed by Roop K Shorey. The star cast included Karan Diwan and Meena Shorey in the lead roles with Majnu, Satish Batra, Prithviraj Kapoor, Shammi, Uma Dutt, Johny Walker, Kumud Tripathi etc in supporting roles. As per Wikipedia, the film belonged to the genre of melodramatic love story. The title of the film reminded me of a she’r of Jigar Muradabadi which reads as under:

Ye ishq nahin aasaan itna to samajh leeje
Ek aag ka dariya hai aur doob ke jaana hai
