(Director Hrishikesh Mukherjee – 102nd Birth Anniversary)
——————————————————————

Today’s song is from the 1988 movie ‘Naamumkin’. This movie was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. It is one of the lesser known movies directed by him. He has given us many master class movies as a director but this movie is not one of them. I was not even of aware this movie when it was released in theatres.

(Debutant Movie – Sandli-1985/1986)
———————————————————

Today’s song is from an obscure movie ‘Sandli-1985/1986’. I have no recollections of having read or being aware about a movie with this title. It was only because of HFGK Vol-VI (1981-1985) that I became aware of this movie. The name of singer Bhupinder Singh in the singer’s list for this movie piqued my interest to look for information and songs from this movie. However, it seems that no video of this movie is available and except one source (Bhupinder Singh topic & Myswar) I do not find the song links of this movie anywhere.

Today’s song is from the film jailor-1938.

The film was made by Minerva Movietone. It was directed by Sohrab Modi. Music was by Meer Saheb and all the 11 songs of the film were written by a young, ambitious poet Ameer Haider Kamaal Amrohavi – who later on became Kamaal Amrohi, a director and husband of Meena Kumari. The cast of the film was Sohrab Modi, Leela CXhitnis, Sadiq Ali (who was known as ‘The Prince of Minerva), Eruch Tarapore ( a relative of Sohrab Modi, who worked only in his films and also sang), Sheela, Sharifa, Kusum Deshpande etc.

Regulars who notice the day and post number of our posts may have noticed that today is day number 5901 for the blog. It means yesterday the blog completed 5900 day of its existence.

Regulars who noticed yesterday’s day number may have also noticed that yesterday’s post number was 18497. In the past, when I pursued “records” more keenly, I would have posted the century post 18500 on the blog day 5900. But with time, you stop giving too much importance to these landmarks.

Today’s song is from the film Ismat-1944.

This was a Muslim social film made by Fazli Brothers Ltd., Bombay. Films made on Muslim backgrounds were started from the very first Talkie film-Alam Ara-1931. In fact, the early filmmakers were making films mostly on Muslim background – be it a Historical, Religious or a Social film, folklore and films based on the Urdu and Parsee drama company stories. In 1931 itself, there were as many as 7 such films like Abu Hasan, Shirin Farhad, Laila Majnu, Noorjahan etc.

On the afternoon of August 27, 1976, in Detroit city of America and at Hotel Pontchartrain to be precise, Mukesh had a massive heart attack and passed away on his way to the hospital. Less than a mile away at Ford Auditorium, he was supposed to perform his last concert of his 1976 US tour. But it was not to be.
A copy of his beloved Ramayan and his self-assurance that his son would continue his legacy were with him when he passed away.

On his remembrance day today, we pay tributes to Mukesh who passed away with his boots on.

Today’s song is from the film Badi Maa-1945.

The second world war had affected the British Raj very badly. There was Rationing of essential commodities and food items such as Rice and Sugar as well as other necessities like petrol, Kerosene etc. The film industry was hit greatly because the main ingredient of films- The Raw film- was put under Rationing. Small filmmakers were hit badly and the big ones got a limited quota based on their average production of the last 5 years. Like other items of rationing, even Raw film was available in Black market at an exorbitant price.
