Today, 6th June, is the birth anniversary of Rajinder Krishan, one of the most prolific songwriters in Hindi cinema. As I looked up the date of birth, I find that he was born in the year 1919. So that makes today, the 100th birth anniversary for him.
A career that spans four decades in the industry saw a prolific output from his pen – close to 1700 songs, and story/screenplays and dialogues for many films. He made his debut in 1947 – as a songwriter for ‘Zanjeer’ (1947) and as a screenplay writer for ‘Janta’ (1947). He passed away in 1987, completing 40 years of active writing work in films, although films carrying songs written by him continued to be released till the early 1990s.

Today is the fifteenth remembrance day for Anil Biswas, one of the pioneering music directors of film industry in India. He passed away on 31st May in New Delhi, in the year 2003. With his active years in the film industry (from 1935 to 1965) behind him, he had moved to Delhi by mid 1960s. Thereafter, he worked with the All India Radio in New Delhi, and was also associated with JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University).

Almost like a déjà-vu happening today.
The year is 1968, one more than the previous episode – we had the film ‘Jungle Ki Hoor’ from `1967 yesterday. Today, the film is ‘Lutera Aur Jaadugar’. The word ‘Jaam’ appears in the song title. And the word ‘tauba-aashiqan’ appears in the body of the song. Other similarities – well they go without saying. A perfect gem of a song from an unknown film, composed by an equally obscure and unfamiliar music director – Suresh Kumar.

The film, ‘Pyaar Bana Afsaana’ was eventually never released. However the songs were already recorded and released. This song caught the attention of the listening public, and it did become quite a popular memory in the radio listening days.
Remembering Krishna Kalle – three years ago this day, she passed away at the age of 74.

Aah, the magical triple zero. There is always quite a long wait to get to a milestone that carries all zeroes in the last three digits. Welcome all, to the fourteenth such milestone. Given where we are today, and from when we started, the average posting rate has been a tad over 4 songs a day, 4.0172 to be precise. Good intentions are always the undoing. I am sure you would have also experienced this. मेरे साथ तो ये बहुत होता है. Take the case of this series itself. The second song is being posted today. When I initiated this series on 30th September with the song “Nigaahon Se Chhup Kar Kahaan Jaaiyega”, I had all the intentions to post one song at least every other day if not every day. The available list of songs is all identified. And see, it is the 11th day now that the second post is coming on. क्या कहना है good intentions का.

Today, October 7th is the 101st birth anniversary of Mallika-e-Ghazal Begum Akhtar. With this, the year-long birth centenary celebrations which started on October 6th last year come to an end. Those who have kept the track of the events may recall that Government of India, Ministry of Culture had announced a year-long birth centenary celebrations of Begum Akhtar sometime last year.
