When the system of playback singing started in Hindi films in early 30s it paved the way for playback singers like Rajkumari, Amirbai Karnataki, Zohrabai Ambalewaali and Shamshad Begum in becoming the top playback singers by 40s. With the emergence of new playback singers in the late 40s like Geeta Dutt and Lata Mangeshkar, demand for playback singers with heavy and high throated voices were on the decline, relegating them to the background. The only exception to this trend was Shamshad Begum who weathered the ‘onslaught’ of Mangeshkars in the 50s and remained fairly active up to early 60s.

Type casting in the film world does not always apply to actors only. Artists in other categories also sometimes suffer the vagaries of being type cast into a particular mould. And much as they try to get away from that image, the perception of the success factor somehow conspires to keep them tied down to the image. There are hugely talented artists in all categories who have been sidelined, much before their full potential could be enjoyed by the viewers and listeners. Granted that there can me more reasons for their fading away before time, but yes, this typecasting has been a significant factor.

“Baawre Nain” (1950) was the film that made the industry and the masses take notice of this new music director named Roshan. Roshan had made a debut with the film ‘Neki Aur Badi’ (1949), produced and directed by Kidar Sharma. With the kind of year that 1949 was – an absolute parade of films with fabulous music, not a surprise that a novice music director’s debut venture went by unacknowledged. ‘Neki Aur Badi’ settled into obscurity both as a film and also for the music. When Kidar Sharma planned his next venture, ‘Baawre Nain’, he restated his confidence in Roshan, by once again engaging him to create the music for it. And Roshan responded likewise, creating such wonderful tunes for this film, this after more than sixty years, this film is remembered now, simply on the basis of its music and songs.
