Mainstream A grade movie makers confined themselves to movies on mainstream subjects- viz boy falling into love with girl and singing songs routine. The tales from mythology, Folk tales, arabian nights tales etc , which were such rich sources for stories were regarded as commercially risky propositions and as such were not ventured into. It was left to small budget small time B grade movie makers to make movies on these subjects.

Golden era of Hindi movie music saw a plethora of musical talents that enriched Hindi movie music with their contribution. It is not that only big name artists contributed, even those artists who struggled to get opportunities and who worked in so called B grade movies also contributed their mite. some of them in fact deserved to getmany more assignments than what they finally ended up with.

“Shamaa” (1961) is a movie starring Vijay Dutt (?), Suraiyya, Nimmi, Kammo, Leela Mishra, Tuntun etc. To me, this movie is notable more for its songs. I have discussed as many as five songs from this movie so far.

“Nishaan” (1965) was a B grade movie starring Sheikh Mukhtaar,Sanjeev Kumar, Nazima, Prem Chopra, Helen, Mukri, Sulochana etc. In these B grade movies, where Sheikh Mukhtaar used to act as the tough guy who let hisfists do the talking and singing for him, the job of singing and dancing as public understood was entrusted to the side hero and the lead lady. In this movie Sanjeev Kumar and Nazima are entrusted with the job of singing romantic duets while Sheikh Mukhtaar concentrates on his strong arm tactics.

“Paalki” (1967) was the kind of a movie that is popularly described as a Muslim social movie. Such movies typically had good songs which were picturised in a typical manner.

“Jahaan Ara” (1964) was a movie based on the life of Jahaan Ara,daughter of Emperor Shahjahaan. The movie, when it was released , was a monumental failure, and the movie was withdrawn from movie halls in less than a week.

“Reshmi Roomaal” (1961) is a B grade movie starring Manoj Kumar (then a newcomer) opposite Shakila (then over the hill). This movie and its songs are quite obscure as of now.

Ho munna jaayegaa baazaar

“Man Mandir” (1971), which is a new movie by the standards of this blog, starred Waheeda Rehman and Sanjeev Kumar. This movie, by most indications was a flop. This movie had some nice songs in it, though, which were popular at that time. I loved these songs though at that time I was not aware that those songs were from this movie. I have already discussed two such songs from this movie in this blog.
