The year 1940 can be regarded as a benchmark year for Hindi film industry to assess its progress in the talkie era as it marked about a decade since talkies came into being. Although studio systems (in which artists were on the payrolls of the studios) continued, slowly the star system was evolving in which the star actor commanded the salary acccording to his success rate in box office collections. During this period, actors with star values emerged. They commanded good salary from their respective studios to ward off poaching by the competing film production companies. Films with K L Saigal, Prithviraj Kapoor, Chandramohan, Surendra, Motilal, Ashok Kumar, Durga Khote, Madhuri, Sabita Devi, Kanan Devi, Shobhana Samarth, Leela Chitnis, Naseem Bano etc were expected to be box office hits.

The name Keshavrao Dhaiber may not ring any bells for most readers of the Blog. He was not as famous as V Shantaram, one of his contemporaries and a colleague in Maharashtra Film Company and later in Prabhat Film Company. I became aware of his name only during the last 2-3 years when I was deep into the film songs of 1930s and 40s. But the name did not interest me much until recently when I came across a song from his film ‘Nand Kumar’ (1938) which made me to study his filmy career.

Kolhapur born Keshavrao Dhaiber (1890-1978) who had done a short stint in the Army as Lancer, started his filmy career in Baburao Painter’s Maharashtra Film Company, Kolhapur as an actor and a technician in the early 1920s. Here, he came in contact with V Shantaram. Both of them made their debuts as directors for a silent film– Netaji Palkar (1927) which they co-directed. In 1929, due to differences with Baburao Painter, V Shantaram and Keshavrao Dhaiber left Maharashtra Film Company and formed Prabhat Film Company along with V G Damle, Fatehlal and Sitaram Kulkarni in Kolhapur. Under this banner, Keshavrao Dhaiber and V Shantaram co-directed 3 silent films – ‘Khooni Khanjar’ (1930), ‘Rani Saheeba’ (1930) and ‘Udaykaal’ (1931). Today is an important day, maybe one of the most important day in the annals of Hindi film music. Today, 18th January, is the day the legendary Saigal Sb completed his mortal journey and departed from this world. After so much that has been written about him, any more contributions would simply be repetitions. But then, no matter how much we may write about him and his singing, it will never ever be able to express the complete emotions about him, and his voice. For one cannot fathom in words and language, that which is a gift of divine.

Going back happily to my favourite decade of the 30’s, here is a song from film ‘Dr. Madhurika’ (1935).

This film was made by Sagar Movietone. 1935 was a period of the early talkie films and the film business was slowly developing into an industry. In the 2-3 years, prior to the advent of sound, the news was already in the air about the silent films soon to start talking and singing on the screen.

Today’s song is from film Aazaad-40, made by the famous Bombay Talkies.

Bombay Talkies was one of the premiere production companies of India in those times. Its films became very popular and the music was lapped up by the audience. There were other equally famous production houses like Prabhat Films,Ranjit studios and New Theatres of Calcutta, all churning out block busters. While Ranjit showed how to make money, Bombay Talkies added prestige to films.

Ardeshir Irani and his film production company, Imperial Movietone was associated with India’s first talkie film ‘Alam Ara’ (1931). In the same year, he was also associated with the first Tamil talkie film ‘Kalidas’ (1931) as a producer. Ardeshir Irani had another ‘first’ to his credit. He produced ‘Kisaan Kanya’ (1937) which was the first indigenously processed full colour film in India using Cinecolour process. Ardeshir Irani acquired the processing rights from an American Company. The film was processed in India with Imperial Movietone’s technicians under the supervision of a foreigner, WM Henius.

Today’s song is from the film Jagirdar-1937. The film was made by Sagar Movietone.

In the first decade after the Talkie Era started, Sagar Movietone was one of the major film making companies in Bombay. The Desai family, along with Dr. Ambalal Patel, were originally in Film Distribution business, but decided to enter the actual film production. Sagar Film Company, which had produced 12 silent films, was converted to Sagar Movietone in 1931, after Desai and Patel joined it.

Toady’s song is from film ‘Achhoot’ (1940),sung by composer Gyan Dutt and singer actress Vasanti.

The second world war started from 1939, but its effects started being felt in India after 1940 only. The Government became alert and sensitive. Lots of restrictions were put on Imports and Exports. All exports to Germany and Japan were banned. Foreign travel came under Government microscope. Imports were restricted to only essential goods. Raw film stock came under Government control (and naturally became available freely in black market at exorbitant price). Taking advantage of the situation, Government declared that those film production houses who help Government in its war efforts, by making films with pro Govt. themes, would get raw film on priority.

Today’s song is from the landmark film ‘Amar Jyoti’ (1936), made by the Prabhat Film company, Poona. It was directed by V Shantaram. It was photographed by his elder brother V Avadhoot and the music was by Master Krishnarao Phulambrikar. All the songs were written by Pandit Narottam Vyas. Today’s song is sung by Vasanti and chorus. The song is also used as a background song few times in the movie since it conveys the essence of the film’s theme- fight against injustice.
