Most music lovers of Hindi movie music are familiar with the names of major artists who began their careers in 1940s and later. But the artists who worked in the earlier decades are not all that well known, and worse, it is often believed that they were not in the same league as the artists who came later. Nothing could be farther from the truth, as I have been discovering.

Aaj hamen ban behad bhaataa

I became aware of this movie called “Amar Jyoti” (1936) thanks to the review of this movie by Greta (memsaab). When I searched for the songs of this movie, I came across a few songs from this movie. Considering that the sound recording technology was in its infancy and the actors themselves had to record the songs live, the quality of the songs were not particularly great at least in the first two songs of this movie that I came across. But when I heard the third song, I sat up and took notice.

Main ban ki chidiya

Even those who do not think much of old songs may have heard of this song or at least this movie. This movie called “Achhut Kanya” (untouchable girl) produced in 1936 was obviously made on a topic that was too far ahead of its time and the makers of this movie did a great social service by making a movie on this topic. It was the first out of only two movie that Mahatma Gandhi is reported to have seen, the other movie being “Ram Rajya”.
