Today is Poet Shakeel Badayuni’s birth anniversary. I came to know about it just now, as it happens in almost all anniversaries that are celebrated in the blog. Incidentally I had written down the lyrics of this unused song from the film ‘Aan”, yesterday only. When I send two /three song writeups to Atul ji , it is better to give him breathing space. So instinctively, I try to hold on and not send him any more till he posts these.

Here in this blog we discuss songs from Hindi movies on a daily basis. Since we discuss songs so it is natural that we discuss the people also who are involved in the making of these songs. They could be the singers, lyricists or the music directors, or they could be actors figuring in the picturisation of these songs. Rougly speaking, this blog by now had 6280 plus songs from 2000 plus movies. Over three hundred singers, over three hundred lyricists, and over two hundred music directors have been discussed in the blog so far. I have not counted the number of actors figuring in these songs, but that number is likely to be more than three hundreds as well.

“Aan” was a film which I made a point of watching in the theatre when it was running in matinee show. I pestered my mother till she took me to see this film. And all this because of one song in the film i.e Maan mera ehsaan arre naadaan ke maine tujhse kiya hai pyaar

Directed by M.L. Anand, Bewefa (1952) was a Raj Kapoor-Nargis-Ashok Kumar love triangle. Both versions of its iconic song “Dil matwaalaa laakh sambhaalaa” rendered separately by Talat Mahmood and Lata Mangeshkar are already on this blog. Video clips of its most others numbers too are on YouTube. But the video clip of a superlative Lata number Badnaseebi kaa gilaa ai dil-e-naashaad na kar has gone missing. I am not sure if this number was only recorded but not included in the movie itself. But if it was shot, it would be reasonable to assume that it was on Nargis herself exhorting herself to desist lamenting her ill-fate.

Ek gaana hai, kareeb chaalis saal puraana – “Chain Se Humko Kabhi, Aap Ne Jeene Ne Diyaa” . From the film ‘Pran Jaaye Par Vachan Na Jaaye’. And the year is 1973. Yes getting to be about 40 years ago. But listening to this song, even today – the sound, the feelings, and the words – all appear to be so young and so fresh. And the lyricist – composer pair is SH Behari and OP Nayyar. A partnership that started in the mid 50s, and flowered exceptionally in the decade of 60s to give so many memorable songs one after another.
