Today’s song is from a Mythological film – Tilottama-1954.

Made by Basant Pictures of Homi Wadia, it was directed by the Trick Master Babubhai Mistry. Music was by the multitasking expert S.N.Tripathi. The cast included Chitra, Kailash, Maruti, Babu raje, Indira Bansal, Heera Sawant, B.M.Vyas and a long list of small time actors, who were regulars in such films. The Lyrics were by G.S.Nepali.

Tilottama was an extraordinarily beautiful apsara from the Swarga. She was especially created by Vishwakarma on Brahma ji’s suggestion. The first chapter of mahabharata – The Adi Parva – mentions that Maharshi Narad detailed the story of Tilottama to Pandavas and warned them that one Draupadi as a wife to 5 Pandavas could become a cause of conflict and that they must be careful about it.

Today’s song is from the film Suhagan-1954.

The film was a remake of a Marathi film, “Suwasini”-1953. It was produced by Datta Dharmadhikari for his own banner Alhad Chitra, Poona. (Alhad was his son’s name). The film was a Hit in Marathi, so a Hindi remake was made. It was directed by Marathi’s famous and successful director Anant Mane. Today’s song is from an obscure, forgotten film ‘ Golkunda ka Qaidi-1954.

When this film was released in Hyderabad, I was still in High school. In those days, in Hyderabad state, in addition to the routine subjects in the school, for the 10th standard, there used to be a novel subject called ” Non-Detail “. There used to be a world famous novel, drama, travelogue or a Biography taught in this subject. The purpose was to acquaint the students with the top class literature of the world and cultivate the habit of reading extra-curricular famous books. I don’t think that this was practiced in any other state of India. This truly helped the students to inculcate interest in reading books other than their curriculum.

When one looks at Hindi movies, one realises that the dominant genres of Hindi movies keep changing with time. In the early decades of 1930, fantasy movies and mythological movies ruled the roost. From late 1940s, melancholic movies became popular.

In 1950s, crime movies, inspired from similar movies made in the west, began to be made by Hindi movie makers. Then we saw lost and found stories in 1960s, and angry young man stories in 1970s and so on.

One notices that the music in crime movies of 1950s were also inspired from west. In some cases, tunes were lifted from western tunes. Since information age was nowhere in sight those days unlike now so movie makers could get away from plagiarisation with impunity in most cases. Even otherwise, western instruments came into usage in Hindi movie magic that were used to create not only western style music but also desi style music.
