Even though I have been a long time fan and a collector of songs from obscure movies, and lesser known artists and composers, and even though after having met this blog few months ago, in song after song on a daily basis, I have encountered wonderful creations from obscure movies, yet it seems there is a huge treasure still to be unearthed. And this wonderful melody is such a superb example. Once again, a song heard many years ago on the radio, and recently rediscovered on YouTube. And what a heartening, foot tapping discovery it is.

Meena Kumari, born Mahajabeen Bano, lived a relatively short life of 39 years, of which all but 4 years, she was working on the silver screen. Born of parents both of whom were stage and cinema artists, she took to working in films at the fragile age of four. She wanted to go to school, but the domestic economic situation decided otherwise for her. Her career took off in 1952/53 with hits like Baiju Baawra and Madhosh, and by the time she breathed her last in 1972, she had already acted in ninety plus films, and won 4 Filmfare awards. In the year 1962, she made history as being the only actress with three nominations for the best actress award in the same year (for Aarti, Mein Chup Rahoongi, and Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam).

A wonderful “searching-for-a-lost-one” song. The movie is Chaalis Din (1959) with a reasonably good set of actors, i.e. Premnath, Shakeela, Nishi, KN Singh, Maruti, Shammi, Chaman Puri, Kuckoo etc. This particular song is picturized on Shakeela as the main singer on screen, supported by Shammi and Maruti. Maruti looks very different and somber, unlike his comical sidekick roles that he has played in many movies of Dara Singh, Sheikh Mukhtar etc.

Ek do teen chaar aur paanch

Many of the songs of Hindi movies deal with rather “advanced” topics viz Husn, Ishq,Pyaar, bewafaayi etc. Youngsters and those young at heart often much prefer songs that deal with much simpler topics, viz topics dealt in their schools, such as alphabets, arithmetics etc. 🙂 There may be school kids who would disagree with me, but there is no denying the fact that songs that deal with A,B,C (or their Hindi/urdu equivalent) or “ek do teen” often become quite popular.

The movie Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) is one of the classic movies of the great producer director Guru Dutt. This is a remarkable watershed movie, about the business of making movies. Guru Dutt plays the role of a director in the film world. The storyline is a very poignant and touching portrayal of his life as he passes through the phases of success and failure, both in the personal and professional domains. In many ways, this movie is an autobiographical essay by Guru Dutt about his own life and its tribulations, down to his supposed attraction for Waheeda Rehman, and how it disturbed his personal family life with Geeta Dutt.

“Chaalis Din” (1959) is an obscure B grade movie that had Premnath, Shakila,Nishi etc in it. According’s to Atul’s axiom,if a movie is an obscure B grade movie, it must have absolutely a grade music in it. 🙂 So here is one such song from this movie .

“Chaar Din Chaar Raahen” (1959) was an ambitious movie that tried to deal with lots of issues and ended up as a confused hotch potch of a movie.

Earlier decades of Indian independence (1950s and 1960s) saw much enthusiasm for nation building in public life as well as in movies. And Soviet Union style socialism was considered the way to progress. Many movies were made on the theme of nation building in those days. and these movies naturally had songs to inspire people.

When I first began this blog, this was not the only songs related blog that I began. I also began a blog on vishesh Jaimala where I would post the transcripts of vishesh Jaimala programmes presented by celebrities from the movie world. They would share their experiences and play a few songs. This programme, to my mind, is one of the best ever radio programmes that one can think of. And what celebrities ! Almost all big names (with a few exceptions) presented Vishesh jaimala programmes those days.
