Mukesh and his Composers – 44
Basant Prakash was the younger brother of famed composer Khemchand Prakash.
While Khemchand Prakash became immortal due to the popularity of songs in Mahal (1949) and among the pioneers of HFM, Basant Prakash is hardly remembered despite composing about a dozen films albeit a few were with other composers.
Whenever Basant Prakash’s name is taken, mention of his short stint with the famous movie Anarkali (1953) is inevitable. It is said that Filmistan’s S. Mukherji first approached C. Ramchandra to compose the film’s music. C. Ramchandra insisted on all songs to be sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Since Geeta Roy was the preferred singer for the producer, Basant Prakash was approached who started work on the film.

Today’s song is a duet from the film Laila Majnu-1945.
1945 was the year when the devastating II World War ended and the film industry heaved a sigh of relief. Many irksome regulations were relaxed. There was no force now to make Propaganda films for war, no shortage of Raw Film and plenty of Finance available through black money , generated during the war times. However, the year saw only 73 Hindi films made.

I have watched the film for the first time only recently after reading the synopsis of the film’s story which appeared to be an interesting murder mystery. A sole daughter of a wealthy father wants to marry a middle-class man. The father has some apprehension because he has two other suitors for his daughter who are rich. But the daughter is adamant to marry her preferred man. Finally, the father has made his mind to go with his daughter’s preference but she is yet to be told of his decision. All the three suitors attend daughter’s birthday bash. Soon, the father is murdered by an unknown assailant. The main suspects are the three suitors who have met the father in the birthday bash and have indirect interest in his wealth if Asha becomes their prospective bride.

#the Decade of Forties – 1941 – 1950 #
————————————————————————
Today’s song is from the movie ‘Batohi-1949’. This missing the beloved song is sung by Shrimati Ghosh.
I have earlier presented a song from this movie ‘Batohi-1949. This movie is an un-released movie of its time. Very less information is available in the Geet Kosh page for this movie. The name of the director for this movie is not given. However some sources on internet mention the name of the director as Kumar Menon. and the banner as ‘T.K. Screen Classics’. HFGK gives the cast of this movie as Bharat Bhooshan, Indu Pal, Krishna Murari, Beena Pal, Kesari, Shivraj, Sapru and others.
Geet Kosh lists six songs for this movie, leaving space for the possibility of more songs for this movie (yet to be known). Music for this movie is composed by S.K. Pal. The lyrics writers for this movie are Bharat Vyas, Vishwamitr Aadil, Ratan Piya, and Bharti Devi. Records for the songs for this movie were released by Columbia Records. Out of the six songs listed in Geet Kosh lyricist name is mentioned for only two individual songs, leaving blank for other four songs. Singers for these songs are Rajkumari, K.C. Dhawan, Manna Dey, Geet Roy/Dutt and Shrimati Ghosh.
