We missed a major anniversary three days ago. Remembering (belatedly) the litterateur, and the famous poet and lyricist, Pt. Narendra Sharma. 28th February, 2013, is the 100th birth anniversary of this illustrious man of letters. Narendra ji was born in 1913 in the village called Jehaangirpuri, in the vicinity of Bulandshehar in Uttar Pradesh, in a Brahmin Gaud family. He was a bright student. Despite losing his father at a very young age, he continued his education, while doing part time work to support himself. In 1936, he completed his Masters in Hindi Literature from Allahabad University.

“Panghat” (1943) was a produced by Vijay Bhatt and directed by Mahesh Chandra and K J Parmar. The movie had Alaknanda, Sushil Kumar, Leela Pawar, Rajkumari Shukla, Umakant according to imdb, but then this site also mentions Ramesh Gupta and Pt Indra as the playback singers of this movie !

I am going down memory lane, to my school days. We would come back from school at 3:30 p.m. and at that time Vividh Bharati would be silent till 5:30 p.m. So we would put on the radio and searching for songs, invariably we found All India Radio (Urdu service) where they broadcast the programme “aap ki farmaish” which continued till 5 o’clock.

I had no much idea about Jahanara Kajjan except that I was aware of a couple of her classical raag based songs in the film ‘Bharathari’ (1944). Very recently, I came across one more of her song ‘tumre darshan ka nainaa taras gaye ho’ from the film PRARTHANAA (1943). I heard this song for the first time and instantly liked it. The song is rendered in dadra style (crisp version of thumri ) based on raag Gaur-Malhar but with typical filmy musical orchestration of early 40s.

Today (25 november) is the 31st death anniversary of R C Boral (19 October 1903–25 November 1981). One of the earliest pioneers in the field of Hindi movie music, it was he who introduced the concept of playback singing in Indian movies by first employing it it “Dhoop Chhaaon” (1935). He has been described as the father of Indian Cinema Music by Anil Biswas.
