Decoit films have been an important genre of Hindi films for a long time. Perhaps, the first talkie film in this genre was ‘Daaku Mansoor (1934) which was directed by Nitin Bose with K L Saigal in the title role. But, after going through the synopsis, the film appeared to be more of a costume drama than a decoit film though the story involved a decoit.

The genre of decoit films started attaining prominence during 1950s and 60s, probably in the background of the stories that were circulated in the newspapers about the prominent decoits of Chambal valley and elsewhere. The newspapers sensationalised the dread decoits like Gabbar Singh, Maan Singh, Mohar Singh, Putli Bai etc on their daring dacoity and the fear they instilled in their area of operations. Such news became the inspirations for many Hindi films such as ‘Mother India’ (1957), ‘Ganga Jamuna’ (1961), ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai’ (1962), ‘Mujhe Jeene Do’ (1963) etc. This trend continued in the 1970s with films like ‘Mera Gaon Mera Desh’ (1971), ‘Khotey Sikkey’ (1973), ‘Kachhe Dhaage’ (1973), Sholay’ (1975), ‘Ganga Ki Saugandh’ (1978) etc. In recent years, ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ (2014) and ‘Sonchiraiya’ (2019) were made with decoit stories.

#The Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
———————————————————————

Today’s song is from the 1962 movie ‘Rashtraveer Shivajee’. I had come across this song recently when I was presenting patriotic songs during Republic Day celebrations. I was looking for songs that praise our national heroes, freedom fighters, and the many unsung heroes who fought the battle for freedom. Before the Britishers our country was invaded by various alien rulers. These rulers tried to dominate the native people by crossing all limits of cruelty, killing them, making them slaves, by converting their faith and religion. However, from time to time there have been courageous and brave sons and daughters of this land who fought to protect the native people of this country. They included rulers from various regions as well as people like Shivaji who created their own kingdom- or ‘Hindavee Swaraajya’ and gave fierce fights to rulers like Moghuls.

#The Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
———————————————————————
(75 Years of Republic of India #Desh Kee Mittee Kee Khushboo#)

The song in this post is a Non-Film Song, though the name of this movie appears in Geet Kosh Vol-IV (1961-962) under the movies that were not released. It was not an entire film but just a documentary made under the banner of Farida Films. Te foot note on this page for this ‘film’ mentions that Iqbal Qureshi, the composer of the song confirmed that it was just a non film song giving the story of China’s attack on India in the year 1962.

Tu Chhupi Hai Kahaan
Main Tadapta Yahaan. . .

The anguished voice of Diwakar, the poet, that begins as a whisper from a famished throat, rises up to the heavens, as the poet is so painfully trying to search for his creativity – his muse, his love of life, a fantasy woman whom he has woven into his writings.

Mohini, whom he meets often at many a turn of the passages of life, is the romance that is rooted in his imagination, the power of creativity that propels his pen to create music and songs which are not understood, not accepted by his family and dear ones.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Baghdad Ki Raaten’ (1962).

The film is labelled as ‘kalpanik‘, (काल्पनिक) meaning based on an imaginary story. I would have loved to meet the writer of this story, who had such fantastic imagination, but the film mentioned that the story was by the ‘Story Department ‘ of the banner/studio. That explains ! It is not possible to imagine such stories by one single person. The Arabian Night stories were supposed to be told by Scheherazade-wife of the King Shehriar of Persia- to her husband at the rate of one story a night for continuously 1001 nights, to avoid her death. I am sure even she would gladly embrace death after hearing the ‘Arabian Stories’ made by the imaginative story departments of Indian films ! In this one department, we easily defeat the rest of the world’s filmmakers !!

Today’s song is a duet from the film ‘Rocket Girl’ (1962).

Man has always been curious about other planets and the other worlds. His attempts to know more about them have been known since the Vedic Times, i.e. about 5000 years ago. Our religious books describe the various celestial bodies and there are many stories told about them. However, the modern human quest, in reality, started first when during the II World War, Germany developed a rocket to carry missiles over a long distance. The Germans called it the V2 rocket. From this was developed the first ever rocket which went into space for a short period in 1942.
