Here is another gem of a song from the 1964 movie Hameer Hatth. This is a semi classical composition, rendered so well by Manna Dey. The composoition is by Sanmukh Babu Upadhyaya, and the beautiful lyrics in chaste Hindi, are by Neelkanthh Tiwari. The words are just beautiful, and need a careful listen.

“Barsaat Ki Raat” (1964) was a movie that only had qawwalis in it, and the movie, riding on these qawwalis went to to become an all time hit movie. Inspired by the success of this movie, a B grade movie maker tried to emulate the movie by making another movie on the same theme. This movie maker in fact went one step ahead and named his movie “Qawwali ki raat”! What an inspired title ! 🙂

The movie “Yaadein” (1964) was as off beat a movie as any movie could be. The movie was shot almost exclusively on one set and with only one actor. This movie was made by Sunil Dutt under his home banner called Ajanta Arts productions Sunil Dutt himself was the sole actor of this movie.

The movie, Yaadein (1964), is an Ajanta Arts production directed by Sunil Dutt. This movie is a superlative theatrical experience, and one of its kind, at least in the era to which it belonged. This movie is a very daring experimental endeavor created by an actor/producer/director of mainline cinema, for the mainline audience. And yet it is an off-beat movie, of the first water. And believe me, nothing can get more off beat than this.

There are some Hindi movie songs that become so popular that they get adopted as part of life. For instance, many prayers in Hindi movies have actually become school prayers as well as prayers during religious festivals. Then there are lullabies in Hindi movies that have become integral part of the growing up process of generations of kids in India. Then there are patriotic songs from the movies that are hugely popular and are invariable played during days of national importance ( viz.independence day and republic day).

I have often mentioned that the Hindi that one got to listen to in Hindi movies is not the same that I studied in my Hindi classes during my school days. The Hindi taught in the school was chaste Hindi whose vocabulary was mainly derived from Sanskrit. The Hindi, as used by Government of India is also of the same nature. On the other hand, the Hindi spoken in Hindi movies contained words that were not familiar to Hindi speakers. For instance, the language used in expressing the feelings of heart in Hindi movies is different from the language used in textbook Hindi.
