I apologize to the readers if they feel that I seem to be stuck in the second half of 60s, while I am selecting songs from Usha Khanna’s films. It seems to be true. Hard as I may try, I am not able to extricate myself from the films of the years from 1966 to 1970. And the reason is that I simply keep bumping into one wonderful gem after another, and the music itself compels me to continue writing about this era of Usha ji’s career. From all counts that I can admit so far, the 60s was the most prolific and the also the most tuneful decade for this composer.

As I am selecting more songs to post for the composer Usha Khanna, I am actually faced by the dilemma on which ones to post first and which to defer. Every film that she has composed for, contains such musical gems that it is a wonder. Being relegated to the B/C grade films most of the time, Usha Khanna has still done a yeoman’s service to the Hindi film music, producing one great melody after another. Coming across the names of the films for which she has composed music, the first reaction is ‘haanh?, what was that name again’, that is the level of obscurity which pervades her creations.

Expressions of love are varied and come in multitude of flavors. And probably the largest collection of such flavors are the songs of Hindi films. It is remarkable that in each film, the poets, and the directors get together and attempt to present these expressions of love in novel and as yet untried ways. And so also in this film and this song. The entire song is presented with the hero firmly clasping one hand of the heroine and not letting her go, while all the time he is singing words, exhorting her to leave if she wants to, nobody is stopping her – Jaaiye Jaaiye Huzoor, Aapko Kis Ne Rokaa Hai.

A gem of a song from the team of Asad Bhopali and Usha Khanna. The film is Simla Road (1969), one more from the now very familiar Jugal Productions. Producer-director Jugal Kishore was an active film maker in the 60s and 70s, mostly producing B Grade action thrillers and films of intrigue and gangsters. Simla Road is no different. An action thriller starring Dev Kumar, Sarita, KN Singh, Jugal Kishore, Madhumati, Jaishree, Brahma Bhardwaj, Leela Misra, Murad, Mehmood Jr., Mirza Musharraf, Maruti, Dilip Dutt, Mahohar Deepak, the film has some very lovely songs composed by Usha Khanna.
