This song is a festival song, a “holi” song to be precise. Everyone is seen with some gulaal applied on their faces, and Rajesh Khanna is seated with Asrani. Rekha, with gulaal applied on her cheeks as well, comes with a lota full of bhang and pours Asrani some of it. Rajesh Khanna also proffers his glass forward. Rekha, not interested in pouring him the intoxicant, thrusts the lota on Rajesh Khanna’s hands and departs on a huff, only to be stopped on her tracks when a song begins.

This is a duet sung by Lata and Kishore Kumar, two of the biggest names among playback singers. But the same cannot be said about the lyricist and the music director, both of whom were debutants. Maya Govind was the lyricist. She was arguably the first female lyricist in Bollywood. Bhupen Hazarika, known more for his playback singing was the music director of this movie.

O P Nayyar and Asha Bhonsle had forged a long professional relation for 15 years which had turned personal as well. The two had continued an affair that lasted just as long. Towards the early years of 1970s, when O P Nayyar was no longer the top music director of Bollywood and his music was losing its hold over the public, his personal relationship with Asha Bhonsle was on the rocks as well. The two finally split in 1972. Prior to that, they had recorded this song “Chain se humko kabhi aapne jeene na diyaa”. From the voice, lyrics and the music, it is obvious that Asha Bhonsle, the lyricist S H Bihari ( a close confidant of O P Nayyar) and O P Nayyar had given this song their best.

The songs of “Anamika” (1973) were so nice to listen to. The lyrics of Majrooh Sultanpuri and music of R D Burman were top notch and the singers, viz. Kishore Kumar and Lata had sung the songs wonderfully.

“Samjhauta” was a movie that has been forgotten by now. And it is unfortunate that its songs have been forgotten too. The movie has not one but two great songs, one sung by Rafi, and another by Kishore Kumar, and unfortuntely both songs are difficult to come by, be it their video or just audio. And it is a shame really.

I have heard this song many a times and I loved it. Madan Mohan created such a nice qawwali which was written by Kaifi Azmi, and how it is picturised ? Not as a qawwali, but as a party song.
