“Mera Jeewan” (1976) is a “recent” movie by the standards of this blog. This movie was no great shakes at the box office, but its title song, viz Mera jeewan kuchh kaam na aaya was quite popular during its time, so much so that other songs of this movie were overshadowed as a result.

It has been mentioned by several readers that Dev Anand appeared almost immortal to them and it was inconceivable to them that he could ever die. But time and tide waits for none and everyone has to succumb some day. Dev Anand breathed his last on 3rd of december 2011 at the age of 88. He led an active life till the end. His zest for life and his youthful exuberance is something that is difficult to emulate for most people. With time , he had lost weight and had shrunk as was bound to happen, but his mental faculties continues to be sharp and he could still walk on his feet. Most people can only dream of such physical fitness if they ever live up to that age.

Another wonderful song, actually a qawwaali, that I discovered recently to be composed by Usha Khanna. The singer of this qawwaali is Jaani Baabu Qawwaal. When I had heard this qawwaali many year ago, and associating the name of Jaani Baabu with it, I had presumed this to be non-film offering, since Jaani Baabu is a professional mainstream qawwaali singer. Only recently, as I was selecting songs composed by Usha Khanna, for posting on this blog, I came across once again this wonderful qawwaali on YouTube, and then realized that it is actually from the film Do Khilaadi (1976).

Today is the day of Rakhi festival, when sisters tie rakhi on the wrist of their brothers. It is assumed that every sister has a brother and vice versa. But that cannot be the case all the time. Just spare a thought for those men who do not have sisters !

Ke aajaa teri yaad aayi

When a normal human being misses his/her beloved, you expect them to bear it privately. But a Hindi movie hero/heroine missing his/her beloved decides to make a public spectacle of themselves. They quickly burst into a missing you song whose lyrics could be something like “Main yahaan hoon tu hai kahaan” or “Ab to aa jaa” etc. They go all over the town singing the song. One can expect them to be doing that in India, but imagine doing them in the streets of Venice, Italy and the local population not even batting their eyelids !

Shaque (1976) is an off-beat social drama, with a notable star cast. The main players in this film are Vinod Khanna, Shabana Azmi, Utpal Dutt, Durga Khote, Bindu, Farida Jalal, besides other lesser known actors. The movie is written, co-produced and directed by the husband wife team of Aruna Raje and Vikas Desai. (This team also wrote and directed Gehraayee (1980) and Sitam (1982)). The theme of Shaque is about a marriage endangered by doubts and fear.

Hindi movies can sometimes educate us on the existence of rare art forms. For instance, how many of us know about the art form called “Charbait” ? I came to know about this term thanks to this song from “Shankar Hussain” (1976).

Aap yoon faaslon se guzarte rahe

“Shankar Hussain” (1976) is a movie which has been forgotten with time though it is just over three decades old and is therefore of recent vintage by the standard of this blog. I recall that one of its songs became quite popular and in fact this song is regarded as a classic now. I am talking about the song Kahin ek maasoom naazuk si ladki which is a fantastic song sung by Rafi.
