Fast forward to couple of decades later. The year is 1971, and she is romancing Raj Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Sanjeev Kumar, Jeetendra, Amitabh Bachchan on screen. A graceful on screen presence, with an impressive portfolio of powerful performances behind her, she belongs to that extra special club of leading ladies that ruled the silver screen from 1950s to the 1970s – Meena Kumari, Nutan, Sadhna, Asha Parekh, Waheeda Rehman, Vijayntimala. . . – all an exclusive group.

“Aankhen” (1950) was produced and directed by Devendra Goel. The movie had Shekhar, Nalini Jaiwant, Bharat Bhushan, Cuckoo, Anwari, Yakub, Yashodhara Katju, Bhudo Advani etc in it.

This movie is of interest to music lovers because it was the debut movie of Madan Mohan as a music director. It is interesting to observe the kind of music that Madan Mohan created in the movie.

Long ago during weddings in the family, couple of my aunts who were fond of singing, would start this singing session, among ladies. There were a few peppy songs, but I am remmbering a couple of songs now like ‘chhod baabul ka ghar mohe pi ke nagar’ from Baabul’ (1950) and ‘baalam se milan hogaa sharmaane ke din aaye’ from ‘ Chaudhvi ka chand ‘. They would sing it in chorus in Shamshad Begum style. They probabaly had no inkling that the song from Baabul is a sad song, and song from ‘Chaudhvi ka chand’ is by Geeta Dutt.
