Today’s song is from the film Jagirdar-1937. The film was made by Sagar Movietone.

In the first decade after the Talkie Era started, Sagar Movietone was one of the major film making companies in Bombay. The Desai family, along with Dr. Ambalal Patel, were originally in Film Distribution business, but decided to enter the actual film production. Sagar Film Company, which had produced 12 silent films, was converted to Sagar Movietone in 1931, after Desai and Patel joined it.

Today’s song is from film Lajawab-50. It was a production of Variety pictures – a company owned by actress Ashalata Biswas- wife of Anil Biswas ( real name Mehrunnisa Bhagat). It is needless to state that the music for this and every film of this company, was composed by Anil Biswas. The film was directed by the veteran J.P.Advani, who was known to Anil Biswas from the mid 30s. However, they came together only in 3 successive films, namely Veena-48, Laadli-49 and Lajawab-50.

I did not have much idea about the film ‘Mehmaan’ (1953) except its star cast. But I have been mesmerised by its 8 melodious songs, two of which have so far been covered in the Blog. The film was directed by Ramanand Sagar, his first film as a director. The star cast included Premnath, Nimmi, Sajjan, Purnima, Radhakishan, Bikram Kapoor, Harish, Mumtaz Begum etc. With Nimmi in the lead role, one would expect a lot of melodrama, sufferings, unexpected twists in the love story etc.
