That occasion is here again. The occasion when we reach a blog century post and then start wondering which song to cover as the century song. This time, I had a genneral idea that which artists should figure in the sopng. Apart from that, I was just as unprepared for the occasion as I generally am whenever a blog century appears. Acting at the eleventh hour and 59th minute has become a habit with me it seems. 🙂

‘Gul Sanobar’ (1953) was produced and directed by Aspi Irani under his banner, Super Pictures. The cast included Shammi Kapoor, Shayma, Agha, Zilloobai, Rajni, P Kailash, Jagdish Kanwal, Nazir Kashmiri, Agha Shapur, Habib, Alka, Ruhi etc.

The story of Gul Sanobar is an ancient Persian folklore which spread to the middle east Arab region and became a part of the bigger ‘One Thousand And One Nights’ of the Arabian Night traditions. I was expecting that the story of Gul Sanobar may have been first staged by the Parsi Theatres knowing their interest in staging many Arabian Night stories. But I could not find any mention of Gul Sanobar being staged by any theatre group. Even Kathryn Hansen, in her book, ‘Stages of Life‘ is silent on staging ‘Gul Sanobar’. Finally, I got a clue from Internet Archive which has posted in its website Parsi Theatre’s booklet of 75 songs in Gujarati ‘Gul Sanobar No Gaayano’ (Songs of Gul Sanobar) which indicates that the Parsi Theatre had staged the play in Gujarati.

#the Decade of Nineties 1991-2000#

Music Composer R.D. Burman’s Remembrance Anniversary
——————————————————————

Today 4th January 2026 is the 33rd Remembrance Anniversary of Rahul Dev Burman whom we fondly know by his nickname ‘Pancham’.

Rahul Dev Burman was born on 27th June 1939 and he passed away on 4thJanuary 1994 at the age of only 54.

Today, on this occasion, we will listen to a few songs composed by him.

The song in this post is from the decade of nineties. This was a period when Pancham was passing through a lean patch of his career till he bounced back in 1994 with the musical blockbuster ‘1942-A Love Story’.

Today’s song is the last and final song of the social film Bade Bhaiya-1951.

As seen in the ‘Hindi film Index’ by Hamraz ji, I found that there were at least 25 films having titles of ‘Bada’, ‘Badi’ and ‘Bade’. There was also another film Bade Bhaiya made in 1957. There films like Bada bhai, Badi behen (3 films), Badi Beti, Bada Ghar, Bade nawab, Bade miyan, Bade Saheb, Bade Sarkar, Bade thakur, Badi bahu, Badi baat etc. etc.

The film Bade Bhaiyya-1951 was probably one of the last films in which actor Agha was the Hero. The film was made by Super Pictures, Bombay. The owner of the banner- Aspi Irani was also the director of this film. The music was by Premnath ( Wadhwan), who was a member of the ‘Same Name Confusion’ pair with actor Premnath (Malhotra). Looking at the persona of actor Premnath, it was strange how so many people thought that he also gave music. Of course actor Premnath actually had received a regular training in classical music from Ustad Jagannath Prasad. He had also sung 2 songs in Hindi films, Rangbhoomi-1946 and Chand Sitare- 1948. However, he stopped singing after that.
