“औरत के दिल पे क्या गुजरे, इंसान भला क्या जाने”

History, they say, is like the view that a traveler takes, when he decides to pause and rest, and then take a look back over the path that he has come. In literal terms, that path, and hence the view, stretches back for miles and miles. Having reached where he is, all he can see now is what is visible from a distance – the high mountains, or tall trees, or big pockets of habitation, or the large rivers, and other prominent landmarks that can still be seen from the vantage point where he now stands. What is not visible are the individual people he may have met and interacted on the way, the small roadside tea shops where he may have rested and had a snack, or the homes of friends, or even a tree, where he may have spent a peaceful night. There may be memories in the mind, but those are not now visible to the eyes. And a plethora of other small landmarks and events and experiences, that are no longer very sharp in the memory.

Missing Films of 1960s – 8

I am really incensed. Generally that does not happen easily, but today it has. Going thru the list of un-represented films from 1960s, the next target film for me was ‘Hawa Mahal’. I already looked for the 78 rpm records of this film, and have drawn a blank. From more than one source, I was informed that no records were manufactured for this film. Disappointing as this information was in itself, I was concerned, but not too much. Because I knew that I have this film with me on disk. So when the time came to prepare a post for the film ‘Hawa Mahal’, I took out video file of the film, with the intent of listening to the songs and to prepare a upload version of one of them.

Good intentions are always the undoing. I am sure you would have also experienced this. मेरे साथ तो ये बहुत होता है. Take the case of this series itself.  The second song is being posted today.  When I initiated this series on 30th September with the song “Nigaahon Se Chhup Kar Kahaan Jaaiyega”, I had all the intentions to post one song at least every other day if not every day.  The available list of songs is all identified.  And see, it is the 11th day now that the second post is coming on.  क्या कहना है good intentions का.

I think people of my generation (born in late sixties & early seventies) got introduced to Kavi Pradeep ji’s songs mainly through his patriotic songs and devotional/philosophical songs played on loud speakers during Independence Day, Republic days, other days of national importance and main festivals of the year.

Meena Kumari’s life was other people’s destination. For own self, it was a road leading nowhere….no point of arrival.

These words of Meena Kumari,  quoted in the book ‘Meena Kumari the Poet – A Life Beyond Cinema’ (2014),  sum up her short life, so well.

Today is the 43rd death anniversary of Mahajabeen Bano, better known as Meena Kumari (August 1, 1932 – March 31, 1972).  Although she had done roles in diverse genres, she was known as the ‘tragedy queen’ of Hindi films. Her personal life was no less a tragedy than the roles she had played in most of her films.  It is said that as a new born child, she was abadoned and put in an orphanage, albiet for few hours, as her parent could not afford to take care of her due to their poor financial condition. A change of mind of her parents brought her back to their residence. But the very thought of she being an ‘unwanted’ child must have lingered in Meena Kumari’s mind later on.  Most of her childhood was  spent in the film studios as she became the earning member of the family by working in the films as child actor.  Her youth was spent in depicting onscreen, the sufferings, sorrows and tragedies that are associated with most womenfolk in India.  After the marriage, her husband saw in her more an actress for his films than a wife.  With this background, one does not need a psychologist to analyse as to why she excelled in her tragic roles. One of her tragedy roles that most often lingers in my mind is  that of Chhoti Bahu in ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ (1962) which, in a way, was a reminiscence of her own life.
