Since today morning there has been a flurry of activity, as the post for Burman Dada birth anniversary took me by surprise. Our anniversary list posts this event on the 10th of this month, and so I was a little surprised to see the song “Dil Mera Udaa Jaaye”, from the 1976 film ‘Arjun Pandit’ posted today morning announcing the dual anniversary of Burman Da and Majrooh Sb together.

So what is it today? Lata Mangeshkar’s birthday. What was it yesterday? Yash Chopra’s birthday. What was it day before yesterday? Dev Anand’s birthday. So what do we get if we put a search for the above combination? A movie called “Josheela” which was released in 1973.

This is one of my favourite songs from a film I like very much-Funtoosh-1956.
When this film was being advertised, there was quite a curiosity about the meaning of the word FANTOOSH. We had never heard this word- especially in the Non-Hindi belt- and no one knew what it meant. In those days, there was no Internet to find out. I was in college and we used to discuss about this word, advocating our guesses.

“Mahal” (1969) , not to be confused with “Mahal” (1949) was a Roopkala Pictures production. It was produced by Mahipat Ray Shah and directed by Shankar Mukherji. The movie had Dev Anand, Asha Parekh, Farida Jalal,D K Sapru, Azra,Abhi Bhattacharya, Kamal Mehra, Sudhir, David Abraham, Sunder, Siddhu, Rajan Haksar, Ratnamala, Pratima Devi, Naina, Ram Singh, R P Kapoor, Manju, Uma Dutt, Nadir, Rehana Vakil, Murad etc in it.

Remembering (belatedly) Vijay Anand on the anniversary of his passing away (23 Feb, 2004).
Really very few artists and film makers in the industry have been as versatile as Vijay Anand has been. Active in the industry since the early 1950s, Vijay is the youngest of the three Anand brothers. He did have an advantage of two elder siblings, Chetan Anand and Dev Anand, having made a place for themselves in the industry, when he also decided to take the plunge. And under the umbrella of his illustrious seniors, he had the opportunity to delve and develop a multi faceted career. In a career that spans more than five decades, Vijay Anand, or Goldie as he was known to his friends, made his mark as a screenplay and dialogue writer, as a director, as a producer, as an editor, and as an actor. His works are limited, given the span of his career, but the quality of his work speaks for itself. The films he has directed are outstanding, and he is acknowledged as the best director for picturization of songs, in the Indian film industry. In this aspect of film making, which is supremely significant given the musical nature of Indian cinema, he is without a peer.

Under the banner of Navketan ( Navketan Films, Navketan International and Navketan Enterprises), there were many films which have become immortals. Films like ‘Nau Do Gyarah (1957), ‘Kaala Baazar (1960), ‘Tere Ghar Ke Saamne’ (1963), ‘Guide’ (1965) and ‘Jewel Thief’ (1967) have been known for the good story and screen play, good music and fast paced direction from Vijay Anand in particular, the song picturisation in these films. Each of his films germinated from new ideas.

For the Generations that became young in 50s, 60s or the 70s, Dev Anand was their Idol. The theatres showing his films used to be crowded with youngsters who tried to copy his style, mannerisms, Hair style etc.
