I take it as a privilege to present the 100th song of a low profile music director who was very active during 1937-1948 though his musical career in films extended till 1965. I have described him as a low profile music director because he and his music has rarely been discussed in articles and books pertaining to Hindi film music. Even Dr Ashok Da Ranade, in his book ‘Hindi Film Song – Music Beyond Boundary’ has not found it necessary to discuss the technicalities of his musical scores who was music director for 58 films aggregating over 600 songs. The music director under discussion is Gyan Dutt.

In the 1940s, Hindi films based on mythological and historical stories were produced among other genres of the film. Minerva Movietone’s ‘Sikandar’ (1941) set the benchmark for this genre of movies. The subsequent movies of this genre like ‘Prithvi Vallabh’ (1943), ‘Draupadi’ (1944)‘, Humayun’(1945), ‘Veer Kunal’ (1945), ‘Samrat Chandragupta’ (1945), ‘Krishnarjun Yuddh’ (1945), Prithviraj Sanyukta’ (1946), ‘Maharana Pratap’ (1946) etc are supposed to have paled in comparison to ‘Sikandar’ (1941) in terms of grandeur, picturisation of outdoor scenes besides screen-play and dialogues.

NURSE (1943), also known as CHHOTI MAA, was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. The star cast included Khursheed, Arun Ahuja, Prabha, Anil Kumar, Indira, Sheikh etc. From the title of the film, I thought that it was a heroine oriented film. But after reading the synopsis of the film given by Shri Arunkumar Deshmukh as comments in one of the songs of the film, it was clear that it was more of a family drama than the story on the life of a nurse. THE SECRETARY (1938) was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. The star cast included Madhuri, Trilok Kapoor, Charlie, Kalyani, Begg, Wahidan Bai, Rajkumari etc. The film was based on a story written by Gunvantrai Acharya, one of the most prolific novelists in Gujarati language. By the way, I observe that Gunvantrai Acharya wrote story and screen play for films directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi for Ranjit Movietone like Gorakh Aaya (1938), Musaafir (1940) and Sasural (1941). Both came to Ranjit Movietone after their stints with journalism in Gujarati newspapers. Incidentally, all the three films and the film under discussion had Gyan Dutt as the music director.

NADI KINAARE (1939) was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Manibhai Vyas. The star cast included M Kumar, Sitara Devi, Sunita Devi, Charlie, Ghory, Indubala, Bhagwandas, Ram Marathe etc. According to an article in ‘Filmindia’ – December 1939 issue, the film was inspired from 3 Hollywood films – ‘King and The Chorus Girl’ (1937), ‘Bluebeard’s Eight Wife’ (1938) and ‘The Rage of Paris’ (1938). All these three films belong of the genre of romantic comedy.

DEEWAANI (1947) was produced by Sohrab Modi under the banner of Minerva Movietone and it was directed by Y D Sarpotdar. The star cast included Wasti, Mumtaz Shanti, Husn Bano, Ghulam Hussain, Abu Bakar, Chanda Bai, Jilani, Sadat Ali, Satya Rani etc. There were 8 songs in the film written by Shams Azimabadi (6) and Sewan Rizvi (2) which were set to music by Gyan Dutt. From the star cast and a couple of songs that I heard, the film seems to belong to social genre, probably a family drama. One song from the film has been covered in the Blog.

When I got the mp3 clip of “nainan jal bhar aaye preet kiye pachhtaaye” of ‘Samrat Ashok’ (1947) sung by Binapani Mukherjee, I checked the song list for the film in http://www.myswar.com and found out that there was another more or less similarly worded song in the movie attributed to Amirbai Karnataki. I thought that this must be another version of the same song. However, I could not get the audio clip or mp3 clip of Amirbai Karnataki version of the song on YT or any other websites. So I wrote an e-mail to Shri Sudhir Kapur whether he had the required mp3 clip. I was fairly hopeful of getting the same from him since I knew during the Mumbai Gangout meets that he had a very large collections of mp3 clips of songs of Hindi films, especially of 1930s and 1940s. And my assessment was right. Within a few hours of receiving my e-mail request, he sent me the required mp3 clip of Amirbai Karnataki version of the song.
