Connoisseurs of vintage Hindi film songs while listening to songs like jaao jaao ae mere sadhjo raho guru ke sang and baba man ki aankhen khol, would identify these songs with K C Dey without blinking their eye lids. The name K C Dey and kirtan songs (devotional and philosophical songs) are inseparable. Since he was blind, this genre of songs suited him best when he was also acting and singing in the films. Whenever I listened to his filmy songs, I felt that his voice quality suited well for thumri and ghazals. Little did I know at that time that he was also an accomplished Hindustani classical and bhajan singer with more than one hundred NFS in Hindi, Urdu and Bengali to his credit. I also find from his discography that he had recorded at least four Gujarati devotional songs in 1942.

“Vidyapati” (1937) was directed by Debaki Bose. This movie had Pahadi Sanyal in the title role with Kanan Devi acting opposite him. This movie also had Prithviraj Kapoor, Chhaya Devi, K C Dey, Kidar Sharma and Leela Desai.

“Andhera”(1943) is a very old and forgotten movie by now. This movie had K C Dey, Arun Kumar, Sitara, Kesri etc in it.

When I look up at the farmaish page, I find that the oldest farmaishes are from one year back and they are about a few songs of K C Dey. Now that I have located those songs, I will try and clear the backlog of these songs as quickly as I can.

“Pooran Bhagat” (1933) was one of the earliest Hindi “talkies”. It had actors like Anwari Bai, Kumar, K L Saigal, K C Dey, Kapur, Tara. It had some memorable songs in it that were sung by K C Dey and K L Saigal.

Here is a song from a very old movie called “Meenakshi” (1942). I became aware of this movie because of a farmaish by Sid for this song. This movie had Ahindra Chowdhury, Sadhana Bose and K C Dey in lead roles.
