‘Aa Jaa Sanam’ (1975) was produced by S A Mehmood and was directed by Yusuf Naqvi. The cast included Feroz Khan and Tanuja in lead roles supported by Deven Verma, Shabnam, Sulochana Chatterjee, S N Banerjee, Shivraj, Mukri, Meenaxi, S A Baker, Kalyani Bai etc.

I have recently watched the film for the first time and I am surprised that it is shot in ‘Black and White’ for a 1975 released film by which time almost all the Hindi films were made in colour. Obviously, the film must have got held up for a long time before it was released. I guess that the film may have been shot around mid-1960s going by the trends of costume used by Feroz Khan who is seen with narrow bottom pants. By the starts of 1970, the fashion of bell-bottom pants was seen in many films. Also, the film has all three male voice songs of Mohammed Rafi whereas after the post-Aradhana (1969) period, Kishore Kumar would have got at least one song for the film if not more because the film distributors normally used to insist.

Today, November 6th is the 40th Remembrance Day of Sanjeev Kaumar, (09/07/1938 – 06/11/1985), one of the most versatile actors of Hindi films and the two-time National Award winner. He was popularly known as Haribhai among his close friends which was derived from his real name, Harihar Jariwala. He was the first one from his family to step into the films on the basis of his talents, eventually becoming an icon of Hindi cinema. I have watched his performances in films for the first time in ‘Shikaar’ (1968) in the role of a calm and calculated police inspector followed by ‘Jyoti’ (1969) in a lead role. I was impressed with his performances in these two films which appeared different from his other contemporary actors.

‘Kaanch Ki Deewaar’ (1986) was an obscure film which I came to know only recently. The film was produced by Kamal Chaudhary and M N Yasin and the latter directed the film. Both the names are new to me and this was their debut film. The cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Smita Patil, Amrish Puri, Shakti Kapoor, Om Prakash, Rajan Sippy (debutant), Purnima, Neelu Phule, Urmila Bhatt, Raj Mehra, Lalita Kumari, Murad, Madhu Malini, Jagdeep, Birbal, Hina Kausar, Jaishree T etc. The film was released on January 31, 1986, about three months after the passing away of Sanjeev Kumar.

It appears that the film took long time to complete or to get it released as I find that there is a song by Mohammed Rafi in the film who had passed away in July 1980. The film’s lead actress, Smita Patil had started working in the mainstream commercial films in 1981 by signing a spate of such films to prove that she can as well be a successful actor in such films. The same combination of producer and director had started one more film, ‘Waqt Kaa Sikandar’ (1996) when the film under discussion was delayed in getting released. It seems the second film failed to get completed or released.

#Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Qawwalis – Part-2 – Post-13)

(Debutant Movie – Sikkaa-1976)

Today I am presenting a lesser heard or never heard Qawwaalee song from the movie ‘Sikkaa-1976’. I do not remember to have discussed or heard about this title during my growing up years in the seventies. I became aware of this movie title through Geet Kosh Volume-V (1971-1980). It seems that this movie ‘Sikkaa’ was an obscure movie of its time, as the list of the songs of this movie didn’t appear familiar to me. But what piqued my interest is the title of this song and it being mentioned as a ‘qawwaalee’ song.

“Sikkaa-1976” was directed by Dilip Bose for ‘Mona Movies, Bombay’. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 30.12.1976. It had Anil Dhawan, Ambika Johar, Krishan Dhawan, Satyen Kappu, Helen, Aashu, Bhushan Tiwari, Mohan Choti, Rajan Haksar, Kalpana Shah, Agha, Dalda, Jugnu, Bholanath, Ratan Gaurang, Satish Khanna, Krishna Khanna, Pradeep Suri, Child artiste Dharmender and others. Child artistes Lovely, Kittu, and Soni make their debut in this movie and Nana Palsikar, Keshto Mukherjee and Anjana Mumtaz had special appearances in this movie.

# Debutant Movie –Mandir Masjid-1977#

Today’s song is a wonderful sufi qawwaalee from the 1977 movie ‘Mandir Masjid’.

I was longing to share this song on the blog. I have listened to this song many times and liked this composition very much. The singers of this Qawwaalee song are Mohd Rafi, Manna Dey, Shankar-Shambhu, and Ram Kumar. I was under the impression that this song also has the voice of Jani Babu Qawwaal but Geet Kosh and other sources do not mention his name. As per information contained in Geet Kosh Vol-V (1971-1980) the famous Qawwaalee duo Shankar-Shambhu had confirmed that this song was composed by them, though the music composer for this movie was Sharda. They had also informed that this song has the voice of Ram Kumar as well(I am not aware about him).
