Today’s song is from the film Tulsi Vivah – 1971.

By coincidence, the film was also made by Tulsi Films, Bombay. It was directed by Candrakant (Gaur). The film’s music was by a “once upon a time” famous, but now at the end of his career, Music Director C. Ramchandra. Lyrics were by Pradeep. The cast included Dara Singh, Jayashree Gadkar, Randhawa, Azad, Abhi Bhattacharya, Anita guha, Rajan Haksar and many others. If only the cast names are shown to anyone, he will surely think that the film was a stunt/action film, what with names of pehelwans like Dara Singh, Randhawa and Azad ! I have seen this film. Dara Singh has done the role of Shiv ji in it. Whenever he talked, you would feel that he would lift and throw the person in front of him!!

As mentioned by me in my earlier posts for this movie’s songs, this movie covers the story of Ramayana starting from Seeta Swayamwar, Kaikeyi seeking the throne for her son Bharat, and vanvaas to Shree Raam in lieu of the two boons that Raja Dashrath had promised her earlier, Bharat not accepting the throne and instead carrying Raam’s paadukaa and worshipping it, and finally Raja Raam’s coming back to Ayodhya after fourteen years of vanvaas.

Prithviraj Kapoor played Raja Dashrath, Nirupa Roy played Kaikeyi, Sulochana was Kaushalya, Anita Guha was Seeta, actor Mahipal was Raam’, and actor Rajkumar (from south?) was Bharat. They were supported by the other cast members viz Saraswati, Balakram, Bhuvna, B.M. Vyas, Sunanda, Niranjan Sharma, Padma Rani, Arvind, Vanmala, Joirabhai, Anand Tiwari, C.N. The Holy Festival of Chhathh Pujaa is going on at present. This festival is dedicated to ‘Chhathh Maiyyaa’ (Mother Chhathh) and ‘Surya Devta’ (Lord Sun). ‘Chhathh Pujaa’ is one of the biggest festivals of India which was confined to the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and some parts of Uttarakhand in the past. But nowadays now it is observed all over the country whereever people from these states have migrated for job and cannot make it to their native places. Moreover those who have settled elsewhere in India have started to observe it in their new residences instead of going back to their original native places on this occasion.

The ten-day long ‘Durgaa Poojaa’ Utsav is already underway all over our country. People are celebrating it with customary fervour and energy. This is also the time for staging of ‘Raam Leelaa’ in many parts of the country. I have fond memories of watching ‘Raam Leelaa’ during my childhood days. If I remember correctly the performing troup also used to add other incidences from mythology in between the episodes from Ramayana.

Today I am presenting a song which covers one such important incidence from Ramayana, that is Prabhu Ram, Seetaa Maiyya and Lakshman boarding the boat of Kevat to cross the river Gangaa. This song is from the movie ‘Shri Ram Bharat Milan-1965’. It was directed by Manibhai Vyas for R.M. Art Productions, Bombay.
