I have been longing to share some posts which have been delayed much due to one reason or the other. This song post is one of them. And I can number it as a ‘vacation nostalgia-post-1’, because I have to share one more in this series.

Nightingale Noorjehan – 16
———————————–

This is one of the songs, which gives you surprise that it was not already covered in this blog. The song was very popular during her time as well as even now, when ‘Rasiks’ often remembers it whenever they talk about Noorjehan. I had seen the film in a traveling tent theater, which had come to our town. After seeing it once, we used to seat in the open space outside the theater daily at night to listen to the dialogs and especially the songs. If we were lucky, sometime on balmy nights, the door flaps of the tent were opened for some breeze to creep inside, we could also watch the film from outside. In the absence of Radio, TV, that is how I used to memorize the words and tunes of those songs. For months after that, it was almost a routine for me to oblige anybody asking me to sing those songs.

Amongst various phases that we go through in life, childhood, though the earliest of our conscious phases, usually manages to imprint some memories in our brain that seem to be indelible right through our life. Folk music has played an important role in popularising Hindi film songs. The films’ producers and more so the music directors knew that folk music based film songs bring instant connectivity with the cine goers especially in the semi-urban and rural areas. The beats and rhythms of most of the folk music are good inspirations for music directors to customise the Hindi film songs accordingly. In the early years of Hindi film music following the advent of talkies, songs were mostly based on classical and semi-classical tunes which included the traditional devotional music. The earliest Hindi film songs recorded on a folk based tune as per my search of the Hindi film songs on the internet was a song bande naav ka langar chhod from ‘Kangan’ (1939) which appears to be based on a bhatiali ( boat man’s) folk song of Bengal. There may be a few more Hindi film songs in the 30s based on folk music.

I was not sure how many songs I will be able to discuss today since I am undertaking a long 20 hours journey by train and going by my past experience, I know that internet connectivity is a problem during that time. But I am pleasantly surprised to fingd that the internet has held up for nearly an hour. It helps that the train is passing through an area which is a metropilital city and as such good connectivity is assured as long as the train remains in this area (which means for another 10 minutes). So I may as well make the most of it.

“Khandan” (1942) ,a Dalsukh Pancholi production, was one of the biggest movies in Hindi movie industry when it was released in 1942. This movie was inspired from the movie “East Lynne” (1931) which in turn was based on a 1861 novel of the same name written by Ellen Wood. This movie dealt with a topic that was considered quite sensational at that time.

Most of the stories in Bollywood movies are derived from the Indian traditions. And in Indian tradition, though a married woman is called “ardhaanigini” (significant half- let us say), but on the other hand, she is required to treat her husband as a superior being, her god, and her place is supposed to be at his feet.
