Bheegi chaandni chhaayi bekhudi

In my bid to clear the backlog of my old farmaishes, here is one song whose farmaish was given more than one year back. This song is from “Suhaagan” (1964). This song is a duet sung by Lata and Manna Dey. Madan Mohan is the music director. Madan Mohan teamed up with Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and Rajinder Krishan in most of his movies and on the other hand he rarely worked with the leading names (Shailendra, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Sahir Ludhianvi and Hasrat Jaipuri). But in this movie, he worked with Hasrat Jaipuri. And what superb lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri came up with in this movie !

One normally associates Ghazals and serious songs with Madan Mohan, but that does not mean that Madan Mohan could not create other kinds of songs, including light hearted songs. One certainly does not associate a Helen-Asha Bhonsle party song with Madan Mohan, but here is one such song.

Ham kaalaa tum white

This is one song that must be as rare a song as they come. Listen to this song and try to judge the people involved in the creation of the song. It is easy to notice that the song is picturised on Dhumal and Tuntun who emerge out of the church after getting married and then immediately burst into this comic song. The song is sung by Rafi and Geeta Dutt.

Kitna badal gayaa Bhagwaan

In 1954, the iconic song Kitna badal gaya insaan(Nastik)(1954) was released and that song took the nation by storm. This song in fact must be regarded as a song that has broken all barriers of time and this song has assured immortality for itself as well as its creators (namely Pradeep and C Ramchandra).

Where was this song lying all these days ? I thought I knew all about Madan Mohan songs, considering that I have posted over 100 of his songs and I have heard nearly 300 of his songs (out of 700). But I was humbled to realise that I am still unaware about many of his gems.

In Bollywood movies, most songs are picturised on lead actors, but sometimes songs are picturised on bit actors playing beggars/ mandicants/ sadhus etc who would be shown singing a philosophical song as a leading lady would be shown suffering. This song is one such song. The lady (who is she !) finds her helpless and she is seen arriving at a temple as a last resort, where this song is sung.
