Talat Mehmood ( 24-02-1924 – 09-05-1998) and the song ‘ tasveer teri dil mera behalaa naa sakegi’ are synonymous. I was under the impression that this song was from a film. But after getting hold of a 78 rpm record ( N.16767) of this song in early 70s, I realised that it was a non-filmy song. I came to know much later that this was one of the top selling gramophone records issued in early 40s and this song brought Talat Mehmood to the limelight as a singer in Hindi film industry.

Ye mulaaqaat ik bahaana hai

I was not sure how many songs I will be able to discuss today since I am undertaking a long 20 hours journey by train and going by my past experience, I know that internet connectivity is a problem during that time. But I am pleasantly surprised to fingd that the internet has held up for nearly an hour. It helps that the train is passing through an area which is a metropilital city and as such good connectivity is assured as long as the train remains in this area (which means for another 10 minutes). So I may as well make the most of it.

“Tumhaare Liye” (1978) is a recent movie by the standards of this blog, and it came at a time when I was fully awrae and alive to the Hindi movies that were being released those days. But I was not much aware of this movie. So it shows that this movie was one of those boring art movies that most movie goers would not touch with a barge pole.

There are some songs that I heard in my younger days and liked them without having much clue about their details. with time, these songs were forgotten. I have become reacquainted with several of these songs again after a passage of three decades or so. And I am not the only one. Several readers of the same generation also offered similar remarks about these songs.

A change in sequencing – I pulled this song up from later in sequence to today, and I shall explain. This song is simply THE most favorite soft romantic song of mine. This write up is about my search for this song, that suddenly culminated today as I finally located a very recently posted video of this song on YouTube.

With this write up, I initiate a series of posts (at least ten, may be some more) to cover some very wonderful gems, and yet, very obscure and rarely heard songs of Mukesh. Mukesh, a voice filled with magic, a poignant and a simple, unpretentious sound. A voice that attracts with its sweet mellifluous tones. A voice that remains a unique rendition to date. Never up there is the top brackets like Rafi Saab or Kishore Da. And yet, the voice that has left an indelible mark on the Hindi film music. And also bequeathed scores of veritable gems for the listening pleasure of music lovers.
