Today’s song is from a film made almost 90 years ago….Maaya-1936.

This was a presentation of New Theatres, Calcutta, founded by its owner B.N.Sircar on 10th February 1931. In a span of just 24 years, it had made 150 films in Bangla, Hindi and some other languages. New Theatres actually was like an Academy for training film industry personnel in the Indian subcontinent. B.N.Sircar, though the owner of the company, had a very restricted role in its film making, once it started shooting. After the story was approved and the required finance was provided, he never interfered in the making of the film, rarely even visiting the shooting floors. This freedom helped many talented composers, directors, actors and the technical staff to learn how to face problems and solve them. There was a “Family” feeling among the workers.

Today’s song is from the film Adhikar-1938.

After a pretty long time, I am writing on a film song of New Theatres, Calcutta. From the 30’s to the early 50’s, New Theatres routinely made bilingual films in Bangla and Hindi. Almost every film coming from New Theatres became popular. The “Saigal” factor was one of the points of attraction, no doubt, but their films without Saigal also became popular.

The name of Chimanlal Trivedi, the producer-director may not ring bell in the minds of most of the admirers of old Hindi films. In Mumbai, he was the contemporary of well-known producer-directors like Chandulal Shah, A R Kardar, Mehboob Khan, V Shantaram etc in the 1940s.

Today’s song is from the film Adhikar-1938. Made at Calcutta by New Theatres, the film was directed by P C Barua, who also acted in the film’s both versions-Bangla and Hindi. The film title was the same in both. While the Bangla version released on 12-1-1939, the Hindi version was delayed and released on 21-10-1939.

During 1966-72, I used to watch one Hindi film almost every week-end. I had only two main criteria for selecting a film. First, I should be able to procure a ticket without a long queue either in advance or current booking. Second, the film should be from a good banner which meant that ‘B’ and ‘C’ grade films were out of my reckoning.

Divinity remembered today. Divinity – as in the voice of the divine – KL Saigal.

A hundred and sixteen years ago, this day, 11th April in 1904, was born a child who would be a legend within his own lifetime, short as it was, and forever be one. The legend continues to sustain more than a hundred years hence. The sound of the songs rendered by him continue to enchant generation after generation of listeners whose constancy of devotion has not, cannot be influenced by the superfluity of singing voices that have also performed since then. Saigal is Saigal, in his own might, in his own dimension – a voice that has not been matched in its depth, in its sentimental expression, and the effect it has on the minds and hearts of the listeners.

Today’s song is from a Non-Descript film-Mazaq-43. I call it a Non Descript film because no information is available on this film anywhere. As the film was released on 31-12-1943, its review was expected in the 1944 January or February issue, but as 1944 issues of Film India are not available in Internet Archive, it is not possible to know about this film. I did not see any film advertisement of Mazaq in any issue of 1943. Either I missed it or it was not there. The gist is, we do not know anything about who wrote the film story or what was the story, how it was received by the public etc.

Hindi Songs in Bangla Films – 13
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘Monihar’ (‘Jeweled Neckless’, 1966, Bangla film) was directed by Salil Sen. The main cast included Soumitra Chatterjee, Biswajeet, Sandhya Roy, Kamal Mitra, Pahadi Sanyal, Chhaya Devi etc. The film is available on a video sharing site with English sub-titles. The film belongs to the genre of the musical family drama and is about two brothers who share a cordial relationship yet there are misunderstandings regarding the financial matters as well as their likings for the same girl. Yet there is no villainous attitude towards each other. And this is the highlight of the film. This is one more among Bangla films which has got the theme of declining influence of aristocracy in Bengal during the British rule.

The year 1940 can be regarded as a benchmark year for Hindi film industry to assess its progress in the talkie era as it marked about a decade since talkies came into being. Although studio systems (in which artists were on the payrolls of the studios) continued, slowly the star system was evolving in which the star actor commanded the salary acccording to his success rate in box office collections. During this period, actors with star values emerged. They commanded good salary from their respective studios to ward off poaching by the competing film production companies. Films with K L Saigal, Prithviraj Kapoor, Chandramohan, Surendra, Motilal, Ashok Kumar, Durga Khote, Madhuri, Sabita Devi, Kanan Devi, Shobhana Samarth, Leela Chitnis, Naseem Bano etc were expected to be box office hits.
