“Baawre Nain” (1950) was the film that made the industry and the masses take notice of this new music director named Roshan. Roshan had made a debut with the film ‘Neki Aur Badi’ (1949), produced and directed by Kidar Sharma. With the kind of year that 1949 was – an absolute parade of films with fabulous music, not a surprise that a novice music director’s debut venture went by unacknowledged. ‘Neki Aur Badi’ settled into obscurity both as a film and also for the music. When Kidar Sharma planned his next venture, ‘Baawre Nain’, he restated his confidence in Roshan, by once again engaging him to create the music for it. And Roshan responded likewise, creating such wonderful tunes for this film, this after more than sixty years, this film is remembered now, simply on the basis of its music and songs.

“WOW” – the first reaction from my mind when I heard this song again after a very long time today. What a pleasant, delightful creation of joyous abandon this song is. One of those apparently never ending stream of gems that keep popping up from the most unexpected corners of this treasure house that we call the Hindi film music. Wow, what a song this is – a song that has stayed obscure. . . rather I would say, it has suffered obscurity for reasons that may never be completely understood. For why else would such wonderful creations of such bubbling music stay away from limelight and away from the listening pleasure of music lovers. I am sure you will believe my words when you hear it. And its obscurity is underscored by the fact that I was not able to locate it online, so far as I could search, and so I am posting this rare gem for my listener friends.

The Shammi-Arjun starrer Malhaar (1951), which was conceived by S.K.Pal and directed by Harish, was first of the two films produced under the banner of Darling Films by singer Mukesh (the other being “Anuraag” in 1956). It had a young and largely inexperienced cast and crew, for many of whom it was their debut vehicle. The film was a showpiece of technical brilliance, especially the taut and precise editing by S. Prabhakar and deft cinematography by M. Rajaram, considering the equipment available to him in that era.

This is a story of the only son of a wealthy jagirdar ( feudal land owner) Choudhary Fazal Mohammed and Sardar Begum, one of his wives. The jagirdar had almost deserted Sardar Begum but he wanted his only son in his custody for which he was prepared to pay a handsome monetary compensation to his estranged wife. But she was not prepared to part with her son. The matter went to the court and the judge asked their 9 year old son to make a choice as to whether he would stay with his father or mother. He had to make a choice between a wealthy father and a poor mother who was facing difficulties in sustaining on a day to day basis. The young boy preferred his poor mother to his wealthy father. In preferring to stay with his poor mother, the young boy may have perhaps made a statement of intent to his father that ‘tu itnaa ameer nahin banaa abba ki tu apne bête ko khareed sake’ – a similar type of dialogue used in the film ‘Deewaar’ (1975). The boy was Abdul Hayee later known as Sahir Ludhianvi.
