One song of the film Flat No. 9 (1961) is already posted on this blog. That one is the iconic Mukesh song, ‘Gaa Deewaane Jhoom Ke, Raat Ki Zulfen Choom Ke’. But the remaining songs in this film are no less a delight to listen to. Despite its wonderful music, there is literally no information available online, about this film. From the Geet Kosh, one finds that this film was produced under the banner of WS Films, Bombay. It is a social drama directed by Ramesh Sharma. There are a total of 6 songs in this film, four are sung by Lata Mangeshkar, one by Mukesh, and one by Asha Bhosle. The lyrics are written by Majrooh Sultanpuri, and the wonderful music is by Usha Khanna. The star line up for this film includes Ashok Kumar, Saeeda Khan, Tiwari, Jagdish Sethi, Helen, Dhoomal, Narbada Shankar, Ravikant, Dinesh Kumar, Kehsav, Prem Saagar, Razia, Aasi etc.

The decades of 50s and 60s are known as the golden age of Hindi film music, and that for a good reason. The quality of music and songs was absolutely superb, no matter what the content of the films used to be. One just has to untwine one thread on this time line, and immediately there is a gem of a song to be heard. Maybe it is an obscure film, maybe the song itself is unheard, or not heard for ages. Maybe the sound of the song is such that the first reaction is, whose voice is this, whose composition is this. But just let the song play and simply listen to it, and before long you will start loving it, and now the reaction would be, where has been this gem hiding all these years. Atul ji has written over and over again about this phenomena, about finding unheard gems from obscure movies, with every plunge one takes into this ocean of music.

Another one of those songs that must find its due place on this blog. This is a gem of a Talat rendition, that has been a favorite of mine since childhood. As I listened to it again today, I checked and realized it is not yet posted. And so here it is, a very melodious and hummable soft creation that simply steals into your heart.

Here is another gem of a duet from the film Apna Haath Jagannath (1960). Three song from this movie are already discussed in these pages. This one is a fun filled duet by Kishore and Asha Bhosle. I had seen this song many years ago on Doordarshan in the Chitrahaar program. The words and the music was all lost from memory, just the visual of Kishore Kumar walking, and being followed by a lady in a car remained in the mind. Recently, browsing through YouTube, I chanced to see this visual as the thumbnail image, and lo, I found this lost friend once again.

This is a gem of a song from the movie Apna Haath Jaganaath. This is a 1960 film with Kishore Kumar and Saeeda Khan in lead roles. The movie was very topical for the time it was created. With a large number of educated youth coming into their own in the society, the issues of employment opportunities were as crucial at those times as they are now, only that such issues were just beginning to get the attention of the mainstream society. The movie is about the difficulties faced by educated young men to establish themselves in jobs or in vocational professions. The movie had a message about the dignity of labor, as well as an examination of the government policies (see the song ‘permit permit’ from this movie; already posted on this blog) that were beginning to breed corruption in the society.

Mainstream A grade movie makers confined themselves to movies on mainstream subjects- viz boy falling into love with girl and singing songs routine. The tales from mythology, Folk tales, arabian nights tales etc , which were such rich sources for stories were regarded as commercially risky propositions and as such were not ventured into. It was left to small budget small time B grade movie makers to make movies on these subjects.
