The 24th of December has always had a special meaning for lovers of Hindi film music.

And that is because it is fondly remembered as the date, when, in 1924, one of the greatest legends of Hindi film music was born. Today is therefore the 90th birth anniversary of this legend.

No prizes for guessing the name of the legend.

Yes, it is our beloved, Mohammad Rafi, who is lovingly and respectfully referred to by many around the world as Rafisaab.

Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 19
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

(1980 – Solo)

It was 1980 that we lost this precious human being and an inimitable, pure and natural artist, to the directions of the Power that we humans do not understand. His gift of the voice and emotional empathy was bestowed by Him, and He chose to call back this endowment to the humanity. With all the hindsight and life’s experience we do understand the inevitability of this event, and our inability to do anything about it. Nothing but resigned acceptance is what we can offer. But in Rafi Sb’s case, one question does keep nagging, with regret – ‘Did it have to be so soon?’. Just at 56 years of age. And a voice that simply did not age at all. Nahm ji had commented a few days back on one of the songs – Rafi Sb’s voice is sounding younger than the actor who is performing on screen (it was Dharmendra, in film ‘Dharamveer’ from 1977).

Truly, a man for all seasons, and a voice for all reasons. A person like him comes maybe once in a millennia. And a voice like his is probably a unique manifestation of God’s own will, maybe once in the sustenance of an entire creation. It seems as if the poet Iqbaal wrote his famous couplet for him, and him alone.

August 19th is the 36th death anniversary of the Sahitya Akademy Award winner for Urdu poetry and Hindi film lyricist Jan Nisar Akhtar. In his last birth anniversary on February 14th, I had covered his profile while discussing the song main abhi ghair hoon penned by him. Suffice it to say here that such a talented Urdu poet born in the family of Urdu scholars and poets was not as successful as a lyricist as his contemporaries like Majrooh Sultanpuri, Sahir Ludhianvi and Shakeel Badayuni. From what I gathered from various websites, he appeared to be surviving more on his shayaris than from writing songs for Hindi films. He was wellknown for his repartee through his shers (couplets). During his filmy career of over two decades, he wrote only around 150 songs for the Hindi films.
