The energy and the vitality that Shammi Kapoor brought on to the screen was unprecedented and unparalleled. Starting off with Jeewan Jyoti in 1953, there was a fair number of films, almost 20 or so, that he did between 1953 and 1957. In many of the films in this period, he was trying to emulate his elder brother, Raj Kapoor. He did attract some attention with films like Rail Ka Dibba, Laila Majnu, Gul Sanobar etc., but somehow the histrionics and the on screen presence in those roles did not come across as a comfortable performer. In hind sight, one can say, that there was a different personality hidden inside that was impatient to explode, but was not finding the right expression.

Aawaaraa ae mere dil

In olden days, most Hindi movie going population used to be quite simple and naive. Give them the usual song and dance and they went back home happy. But if you gave them anthing different, they they would be out of their depth and fail to turn up to watch such movies. So I am not suprised that movies made on nonmainstream themes failed to attract audiences, even when they won critical acclaim and even Government awards.

Ramanand Sagar, the director of this film, has been active in the Hindi cinema as a story and dialogue writer since the early 1950s. He directed his first film in 1953 (Mehmaan), but it was in 1960 that he really established himself as a director with the film Ghunghat. This was followed by Zindagi (1964) and Aarzoo (1965). He then established Sagar Arts International, his own production house an went on to produce and direct such famous hits like Aankhen (1968), Geet (1970), Lalkar (1972), Charas (1976), Prem Bandhan (1979) etc. Beyond all the film world creations, Ramanand Sagar is more famous for the TV serial Ramayan, which he created in 1987, whose success established him as a household name all over India.
