“Patanga”(1971), not to be confused with the blockbuster “Patanga”(1949), was produced by R S Sharma aand Kedar Kapoor. Kedar Kapoor was the director of this movie as well. In the past, I have discussed some of the practical challenges that I face while discussing songs in the blog on a regular basis. Some of the obvious challenges that one faces are official job, or personal works. For instance, if I am on journey or meetings or any other reasons that does not allow me to devote as much time on the blog then my output for those days become low. Likewise, when personal reasons beckon, then also I am unable to devote time to blogging. I have learnt to maintain my normal output on the face of usual official and/or personal commitments.

With the success of “Chor Machaaye Shor” (1974), Shashi Kapoor had become a much sought after actor.Shashi Kapoor decided to make hay while the sun shone and he signed up each and every offer that came his way. Shashi Kapoor signed up so many movies that he did not have dates to give for his various producers for shooting. Normally actors give “dates” in units of “shifts” for shooting, where one shift consists of six hours (I may be incorrect about the duration of a shift. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on a “shift”). But Shashi Kapoor began to give time in hours for shooting, much to the chagrin of his producers, including Raj Kapoor, his own brother.

“Pyaar Kiye Jaa” (1966) was a Chitralaya Pictures production. The movie was directed by C V Sridhar. The movie had Kishore Kumar, Kalpana, Shashi Kapoor, Rajshree(South), Mehmood, Mumtaz, Om Prakash, Chaman Puri, Shivraj,Shyamlal, Veena Kumari, N.S.Bedi, V.D.Puranik etc. The movie turned out to be a big box office success.

Talking about romantic pairing in Hindi films, Nanda – Shashi Kapoor pairing is probably the most attractive pair in the 60s. It is interesting to note their career graphs. Both of them started off in the films as child artists. Nanda’s father, Master Vinayak, passed away when she was just 8 years old. She was obliged to start working in films as a child artist, Baby Nanda, due to financial difficulties at home. On the other hand, as a child, Shashi was part of the already famous Kapoor clan, and the youngest son of Prithviraj Kapoor. And with all his family seniors in the cine business, it was only natural that followed their footsteps. He too appeared in many films as a child artist.

I have not seen the film YE DIL KISKO DOON (1963) but I have watched all the available video clips of the songs umpteen times . I enjoyed these songs some of which are audio-visual treats. The film was produced under the banner of Bindu Kala Mandir and directed by Kanak Mishra who was also the story and screen play writer. Star cast included Shashi Kapoor, Ragini, Agha,Jayshree Gadkar, Jeevan, Sajjan, Asit Sen etc. All songs of the film were written by Qamar Jalalabadi and set to music by Iqbal Qureshi. The film’s name may have been inspired by a Helen song ‘itni badi mehefil aur ek dil kisko doon’ from the film ‘Dil Apna Aur Preet Paraayi” (1960), but could not inspire thea udience to come to the theatres and watch the film. The film failed at the box office and with this, Shashi Kapoor’s struggling days to establish him as a lead actor were prolonged. It was about 2 years later that he could established himself as a lead actor with the box office success of the film ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’ (1965). For Iqbal Qureshi, the film’s music director, once again the luck was not in his favour. His efforts in churning out great songs were wasted in a film that has now been almost forgotten.

“Suhaana Safar” (1970) is an obscure movie despite being a “recent” movie by the standards of this blog :). The movie was produced by R C Kumar and directed by Vijay. Its starcast had Shashi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore, David Abraham, Lalita Pawar, K. N. Singh, Om Prakash, Tiwari, Bhagwan, Sunder, Manmohan Krishna, Leela Misra, Randhir, Mukri, Keshto Mukherjee etc in it. Now we know why the movie was obscure despite being a recent movie :).
