This she’r was written by the young Majrooh Sultanpuri probably sometime in the 1940s. Perhaps he was goaded by the idealistic impulses when he was  associated with the Progressive Writers Association (PWA), a left-oriented ideological group.  Nonetheless, for Majrooh Sultanpuri, it has been a quick transformation – from an idealistic poet of PWA  to a lyricist in the film industry.

Marine Drive was a Sippy Films Production. It was produced and directed by G P Sippy. The movie had Ajit, Bina Rai, K.N.Singh, Vijayalaxmi, Johnny Walkar, Yakub, Om Prakash, Tuntun, Mohana, Anwar Hussain, Hari Shivdasani, Rajan Kapoor, Jankidas, Roopmala etc in it.

“Mahal” (1949) was a Bombay Talkies production. This movie was directed by Kamal Amrohi who was making his debut as a director in this movie. This movie was the first Hindi suspense movie and it was made in an extremely professional manner. When the movie begins and credits roll on the screen against the backdrop of a spooky looking mansion (Mahal) and accompanied by suspenseful background music, each and every name that appears on the screen turns out to be legendary name, be they actors or background personnel. For example, choreography of dances in this movie was done by Pt Lachchu Maharaj, while the cinematographer of this movie was Josef Wirsching.

Rajkumari Dubey (1924 – 20/03/2000), popularly known as Rajkumari, was one of the earliest playback singers who dominated playback singing in the 40s. During my younger days, I used to identify her with a popular song ‘sun bairi balam sach bol re’ from the film BAAWRE NAIN (1952). It was her interview on Doordarshan in the 80s and some other video clips of her performances that made me to search for more of her songs. I found that she was not only an accomplished singer but also a ‘zinda dil’ (lively) person who zest for life was not dampened by her adverse financial condition in her later life.
