KHAZAANCHI (1941) was produced by Lahore based Pancholi Art Picture owned by Dilsukh Pancholi and directed by Moti Gidwani. The star cast included Ramola, S D Narang, M Ismail, Durga Mota, Manorama, Ajmal etc. Recently, I watched this film on the internet and felt as if I was watching one of the films of 50s with a familiar story line – romance, a villain, murders, court proceedings, climax scenes of chase etc and finally victory of truth over evil. No doubt, this film was a blockbuster at the box office front. I am giving below a synopsis of the film story just to get an idea as to how this type of the story line became familiar in the films mostly produced in the 50s.

Welcome all to the 5200th offering on this blog. An enchanting journey that continues to grow from strength to strength, has reached another landmark today. It seemed just like yesterday that we hit the 5000 mark (it was on 13th November), and lo, we are already 200 songs even beyond that magic number today. Congratulations to all, and especially to Atul ji, for being the consistent driving force behind this effort. Besides being the 5200th post, this write up also celebrates the century of songs on this blog, by the music director Hansraj Behl.

What an endearing song, and what a mellifluous voice. Such a wonderful gem of a song, from the first film for which Hansraj Behl composed the music. The film is ‘Pujari’ from 1946. This was the debut year for Hansraj Behl, and 3 films containing his compositions were released that year. As per records, this film is he first one for which he started composing.

“Preet” (1945) was directed by Ram Daryani and it had Chandramohan, Nazir , Snehprabha , Swarnalata , Pahari Sanyal, Gope , Gulab etc in it. I have discussed as many as three songs from this movie, notwithstanding the fact that the songs of this movie are just as obscure as the movie itself.

Here is an absolute gem of a song that has been lying hidden all these decades.
This song is from “Nayi Kahaani” (1943). I am not only surprised that music lovers have forgotten this song, I am even more surprised at the fact that the print of this movie is still available and that too in a reasonably pristine condition, going by the print quality of this picturisation. So kudos to the people who have preserved the print of this movie in such a good condition.

While looking for songs of “Heer Ranjha” (1970), I discovered that this was not the only movie bearing this title. There have been as many as six movies called “Heer Ranjha” over the decades ! “Heer Ranjha” (1970) -the fifth movie bearing this title is the most well known of them, thanks mainly to its music. Prior to this movie, “Heer Ranjha” (1948) -the fourth movie with this title, was the most well known movie of this name.
