The formula called for a debutant heroine pitted against Shammi Kapoor, Rafi singing some fantastic songs, Rajendranath as the sidekick, and the resultant movies would be lapped up by the public.

I have already mentioned that the movie “Dosti” (1964) was made memorable thanks to its music. Rafi sang some immortal songs in this movie and Laxmikant Pyarelal’s career was launched big time with this movie.

This is a song from Didi (1959) and what a song it is ! It is sung by a female voice other than the usual names. It is Sudha Malhotra who has sung this song. Not just singing, she was also the music director of this song. Lyrics were written by Sahir Ludhianvi.

“Dosti” (1964) was a Rajshri production movie that had an idealistic and moralistic storyline. But the movie is today known for its music. Just about every song ( most of them Rafi solos) went on to become immortal songs. It is difficult to pick the best of them, and I advise that one should avoid the temptation to rank them, and instead one should just enjoy listening to them.

Chain se humko kabhi

O P Nayyar and Asha Bhonsle had forged a long professional relation for 15 years which had turned personal as well. The two had continued an affair that lasted just as long. Towards the early years of 1970s, when O P Nayyar was no longer the top music director of Bollywood and his music was losing its hold over the public, his personal relationship with Asha Bhonsle was on the rocks as well. The two finally split in 1972. Prior to that, they had recorded this song “Chain se humko kabhi aapne jeene na diyaa”. From the voice, lyrics and the music, it is obvious that Asha Bhonsle, the lyricist S H Bihari ( a close confidant of O P Nayyar) and O P Nayyar had given this song their best.
