Like how Indians achieved freedom on 15 August 1947, most kids like me achieved their freedom when they started going to college. I achieved my freedom in may/ june 1978, when I passed my matriculation examination and got admitted to college. When I was in school, the only landmark I passed while commuting between home and school was the railway station. But now I came across almost all the movie halls of Ranchi as I commuted between home and college (St Xavier’s College, Ranchi). Being a college going person, I was considered grown up. In reality I was not even 16 at that time and I was not able to handle this new found freedom with responsibility.
So I began to watch movies with a vengeance when I should have been attending practical classes, that took place in the second half coinciding with the matinee show of movies.
It is not that I only watched matinee shows. There were occasions when I would be alone at home. Then I would watch evening and even night shows. Returning back on foot at midnight after the night show was no big deal for me. Law and order was that good in Ranchi those days. I am not aware how things are there today.
‘Jaani Dushman’ (1979) was much in news even before its release. It was supposed to be a mega movie, challenging all the mega movies that had come before, like say ‘Mughal e Azam’ (1960), ‘Waqt’ (1965), ‘Sholay’ (1975) etc. But there was a catch. The censor board felt that the movie was a ‘horror’ movie and watching it would be a dreadful exercise for weak hearts. So Censors, after lots of delays and objections, finally allowed the movie to get released with an A certificate.
I watched this movie in night show. The fact that it was a horror movie, and an A cerificate movie, and thirdly I myself was not an adult till that time did not deter me. Macho people in Bihar (Ranchi was still Bihar those days) did not care for such minor details. 🙂
When I watched the movie, I wondered what was the fuss about this being a ‘horror’ movie. There was no horror whatsoever as far as I was concerned. There was one scene where the ghost is supposedly seen rotating his head while this body is stationary. I could clearly detect that the body was actually built of cardboard, and the ghost (played by Sanjeev Kumar) stood inside the cardboard body and moved his body. Only the most naive people would fail to see this cheap ruse. Instead of feeling any horror, I felt pity at the makers of the movie as well as at the censors.
Even the movie was no great shakes. Indian movie makers have created a false narrative about ichchaadhaari naagin and they keep making movies on this theme. And the gullible movie watchers keep falling for this false narrative.
I was not much impressed with this movie. It was well past midnight when the night show ended and I returned back home on foot, walking some two kms. Most of the walk was along the road running parallel to the rail track going towards Ranchi Railway station.
This movie, which was a damp squib as far as I was concerned, was produced and directed by Raj Kumar Kohli for Shankar Movies, Bombay. The huge star cast of the movie included Sunil Dutt, Sanjeev Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha, Reena Roy, Neeta Mehta, Shobhini Singh, Roopesh Kumar, Madan Puri, Shakti, Anwar Hussain, Amrish Puri, Murad, Sulochana, Jayshree T., Indrani Mukherji, Aarti, Sheetal, Raza Murad, Jagdeep, Paintal Mac Mohan, Ram Soni, Maruti etc. Then there were special appearances by Vinod Mehra, Vikram, Prem Nath, Rekha, Neetu Singh, Bindiya Goswami, Sarika. Yogita Bali and Aruna Irani were in guest appearances. Then there was “above all- special apperance”- by Jeetendra.
Was I impressed by this star cast ? Not a chance. Where were the biggest names of the industry ? No Amitabh Bachchan, No Dharmendra, No Vinod Khanna. No Hema Malini, No Zeenat Aman, No Parveen Babi. I was suitably underwhelmed with the cast of the movie.
The songs of the movie were popular. The Rafi doli song soon became an iconic song, at par with his earlier doli song “Baabul ki Duaayen leti Jaa“. Apart from that I found most other songs s as just so so stuff.
The movie had six songs in it. Five songs have been covered in the blog so far. Here are the details of these five songs :-

Only one song from the movie is left to be covered. Here is that song.
This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Shatrughan Sinha utters a few words and that is enough for him to get credited as a singer in this song. Verma Malik is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. The song is picturised on Reena Roy and Shatrughan Sinha. The previous song covered earlier this year was also picturised on Reena Roy but there it was sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Reena Roy singing separate songs in the voices of different Mangeshkar sisters in the same movie, this did not appear anything special those days, but with passage of time this must be regarded as something special. There may not be so many cases where the same actor sings in the voices of different siblings.
As mentioned earlier I did not find the songs of the movie (apart from one Rafi solo) any great shakes. But I was in a minority. With time, these songs have retained their popularity. Youngsters, may of them not even born when this movie was released appear quite impressed with the songs of the movie. This song, both its singing and picturisation gets favorable comments from most people watching this song on YouTube. When I think about it, I have to grudgingly admit that the songs of this movie are good songs to listen to.
I did not pay much attention to this song in the past. But now that I paid attention, I realise that it is nicely sung song by Asha Bhonsle. With this song, Asha Bhonsle silently and unnoticeably completes 2900 songs in the blog.
So, with this song, “Jaani Dushman”(1979) gets YIPPEED in the blog whereas Asha Bhonsle completes a barely believable 2900 songs in the blog.

Today 7th January’2022 is the 65th birthday of actress Reena Roy (born on 07th January’1957).
In my growing years,(the seventies) and further in eighties she was one of the leading actresses in Bollywood.
I got to watch many of her movies in my growing years and later when I was a grown-up boy.
I have earlier written an article on her birthday on the blog. I am not going to repeat the same again. I liked her performance in all the movies which I have watched of her so far. I love to watch her movies whenever I get a chance or whenever they are played on TV channels.
The discussion on the movies of the ‘decade of seventies’ is incomplete without the mention of this actress and her films. We are not going to discuss the list of her movies in this article. She had been a part of many prominent movies of the ‘seventies’ and ‘early eighties.’ And today’s movie is one of her prominent movies from the end-seventies.
Today’s movie is ‘Jaani Dushman-1979’.
“Jaani Dushman-1979’ was directed by Raj Kumar Kohli for his home productions ‘Shankar Movies, Bombay’.
Raj Kumar Kohli was also the producer of this movie.
The movie had a long list of star cast like Sunil Dutt, Sanjeev Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha, Reena Roy, Neeta Mehta, Shobhini Singh, Roopesh Kumar, Madan Puri, Shakti, Anwar Hussain, Amrish Puri, Murad, Sulochana, Jayshree T., Indrani Mukherji, Aarti, Sheetal, Raza Murad, Jagdeep, Paintal Mac Mohan, Ram Soni, Maruti and a long list of other artists.

We can see from the above table that four songs of this movie have already been posted on the blog earlier. This movie started its journey on the blog in the initial period of the blog viz in 2008- the first year of the blog.
However, the second song from this movie had to wait for almost seven years and it was posted on 28.11.2015. This movie again got overlooked and its third and fourth songs were posted on the blog on 24.07.2018 & 31.07.2019 respectively. Its after another ‘more than two-years’ gap that the fifth song from this movie is being discussed on the blog.
I wish to see this movie in the ‘Yippeeee-land’ and that is the reason I selected a song from this movie. Earlier I was looking for a new movie to be introduced on the blog and had almost finalized a song from it. But now let us help 😊 ‘Jaani-Dushman’ to a step closer to ‘Yippeeee-land’.
Today’s song is the sole Lata Mangeshkar song in this movie. This is also a solo song.
On screen it is Reena Roy lip-syncing the song and we can see Sunil Dutt in the picturisation of this song with Reena Roy.

It is that day of the year again.
The 31st of July.
A date that doesn’t need any reminder for lovers of HFM.
Of all the days in the calendar, a few stand out – and the 31st of July is one of them.
For it is the death anniversary of one of the most loved and respected figures of the Hindi film industry, Mohammad Rafi, respectfully referred to as Rafisaab.
Today on his 39th death anniversary, we on this blog, remember him with great fondness and respect.
I’ve written about Rafisaab many times here on this blog. In fact, there’s no one I have written about more than about Rafisaab.
To be honest, there really isn’t anything more for me to say that I haven’t already said before.
How I, growing up in a Kishore-dominated era, fell in love with Rafisaab’s voice.
How I’ve done all-nighters listening to Rafisaab songs, completely losing track of time.
How much I respect Rafisaab for being such a good human being, inspite of having the power to abuse his position, if he had wanted.
I’ve written about all this – and more. And I don’t want to bore readers here by repeating stuff.
Not that I get bored of writing about Rafisaab. Never. When I don’t ever get bored of listening to his voice, how can I possibly get bored of writing about him? It is such a pleasure, and an honour, to write about Rafisaab.
So whether I have any new material or not, I will write about Rafisaab – even if it is only a few lines. That is the very least I can do for someone who has given me so much joy in life. And on his Remembrance Day, I just have to write a few lines for him – to thank him for everything.
Different people make a mark in this world for different reasons. Not all leave a legacy of course, but I doubt even those who do, have any idea of the magnitude of the legacy they would leave behind. And its endurability.
I doubt Rafisaab thought about all this when he was alive. He was a simple man, happy to earn his living through the one profession that he loved, and knew he was loved for – singing. Even for that, he was humble enough to always point upwards, to God, to suggest He was to thank for everything.
Rafisaab was very soft-spoken. For all his animation while singing, he was an extremely shy person in conversation and avoided interviews. Which is also why there are very few interviews of him available out there. It is our loss, but then that was the person he was. At least we have his songs, and anecdotes of those who knew him with us.
Rafisaab was devoted to his profession – he would do riyaaz for hours. He enjoyed spending time with his family. And enjoyed playing badminton. And good food. A man who always had a smile on his lips, who never thought ill for others – on the contrary, he went out of his way to help others.
A simple man – but what a legacy!
One that he would never have imagined during his lifetime.
Even today, 39 years after he is gone, there isn’t a day when his songs are not playing on radio. There isn’t a day when HFM lovers from around the world are not listening to his songs on whatever device they have. Today, thanks to technology, we have access to music on demand.
Yes, Rafisaab has enriched the lives of millions by his sheer voice. And that, for decades. And, I am sure, will continue for decades too. Such is the love people have for Rafisaab. It transcends generations.
This is another aspect that makes me really happy for him. It is great to see young generations today, even teenagers, listen to Rafisaab’s songs. Of course, their music interests are current too – and they should be. But from what I’ve seen, many of them are still happy to listen to old HFM songs – and Rafisaab, of course. Which is why I say Rafisaab’s voice transcends generations.
In my own case, I know my next generation is also very fond of Rafisaab. My niece’s husband invariably plays Rafisaab songs in his car. Not just for me, but for himself too. Not that my niece complains. She is herself very fond of Rafisaab. 🙂 They like current songs too, but Rafisaab is a fixture in their car. Especially 1960s songs like “dil ke jharoke mein”, “pukaarta chala hoon main” and “deewana hua baadal”. I swear, I did nothing to influence them – it all happened by itself. 🙂 Actually, my niece’s father-in-law is also a Rafisaab fan, so maybe that played a role too.
Now my niece has a kid – he is not even 3, but I have a feeling he will also soon be listening to Rafisaab. 🙂
I will not be surprised if this is the story in many other families too. I hope it is – then Rafisaab’s legacy is in safe hands.
Rafisaab deserves nothing less. A person with such a divine voice, a person who had such a good heart, who did good for so many, deserves every little bit of love and respect he gets.
I always have a warm feeling, and feel energized, when I discuss, or write about, Rafisaab. His songs immediately come to my mind, THAT voice, those intonations in the rendering. I get lost, happily so, thinking about his songs.
I can keep going on and on, but then I will be repeating what I’ve written in the past. And will be boring the readers. 🙂
So I’ll just move on to the song for today.
This is from Jaani Dushman (1979). A decade right up my sleeve, given that I’m a 1970s boy. Avinashji, himself a huge Rafisaab fan, sent me the lyrics and requested me to do a write-up.
By the late 70s, Rafisaab had regained his place in public mindspace. The first half of the decade had been totally dominated by Kishore Kumar (inspite of a few Rafisaab hits). But by the mid-70s, Rafisaab began coming back. I remember Laila Majnu (1976) songs being a success. A year later, he had chartbuster hit songs in Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Hum Kisise Kam Nahin (1977) and Apnapan (1977), to mention just three films.
And so he continued, with hits in Abdullah (1980) and Karz (1980), right until his untimely death.
Jaani Dushman (1979) was during his revival phase.
The film has the popular, foot-tapping Rafisaab-Asha Bhosle duet “tere haathon mein pehna ke chudiyaan”, but also the song of today “chalo re doli utthao kahaar” (which comes multiple times in the film, if I remember right), was popular too.
The film itself is a multi-starrer in keeping with the trend of the time. Those were the days of multi-starrers – many commercial films had two or more lead heroes and heroines. JD went a step further, and must be considered a mother of multi-starrers – it had at least 5 “heroes” – Jeetendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Vinod Mehra, Shatrughan Sinha and Sunil Dutt. And Rekha, Reena Roy, Bindiya Goswami, Neetu Singh and Sarika amongst the “heroines”. Other movies of that era that were multi-multi-starrers that come to mind are Naagin (1976) and the Burning Train (1980).
I remember seeing the film at the time, but given my pathetic memory, I don’t remember too much of it. I do remember that it was meant to be a horror film of sorts, where a monster is supposed to murder every newly-wed bride. Something like that.
The songs of the film were quite popular, and the film too did well I think.
“Chalo re doli utthao kahaar” is a background song, picturised during the bidaai of a daughter as she leaves her parents’ home. It is a typical Rafisaab song – he was very good at emotional, background songs of this type. With their ebbs and flows.
Talking of emotional, background songs, am reminded of Ravi, the composer of songs of Waqt (1965) saying he had insisted with the Chopras on Rafisaab singing “waqt se din aur raat”, though Mahendra Kapoor, and not Rafisaab, was generally their preferred singer. He had said that this song would suit Rafisaab more than anyone else.
Similarly Kalyanji Anandji picked Rafisaab to sing a couple of lines as background song in that death scene in Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978) – “zindagi to bewafa hai, ek din thukraayegi”. Anandji said in an interview that he was a bit embarrassed to ask Rafisaab to sing those lines, because he had no other song in the film, and it was only a couple of lines. But he wanted them to be in Rafisaab’s voice. Without the slightest ego, Rafisaab rendered those lines with his usual high standards.
L-P, ever loyal to Rafisaab, even during Kishore Kumar’s peak, used him to render the emotional background song “nafrat ki duniya ko chhod ke” of Haathi Mere Saathi (1971) even though Kishore Kumar sings the songs picturised on Rajesh Khanna.
This song for today is also an L-P composition. I request you to please listen to this song – and remember Rafisaab today.
Rafisaab, you will always be in our hearts. The years roll by, but the love and respect does not diminish one bit. For what you’ve given the world, millions are ever grateful to you.

Congratulations to Atul ji and all team members on this tenth anniversary of this wonderful musical blog!!! Our beloved blog – ASAD – has completed ten years now and as expected the celebration has to be bigger and bigger. And other than this being a great achievement, it’s also the time to gear up for the next bigger celebrations i.e. 15000 posts, 20000 next and more. . .
For this special occasion, and as it was expected of, all members were asked to share their joy and happiness through write ups and songs. So, when the ‘circular’ 😊 to this effect was received in mail and the deadline was given I started to look for those special subjects close to heart, which can be shared here on the blog with songs on this special occasion. I started thinking over the main reason for me to be associated with this blog – which is nostalgia and specifically related to the movies of the ‘seventies’, and the years when I was growing.
When my association with this blog started, and I started sending contribution for lyrics, they were mainly the songs which have over the years been in my memory since childhood and/or those which I have been looking for all the years during which I grown up – songs that used to be there and were listened to during those years – the seventies. . . and continuing to the initial years of the ‘eighties’. . .
There was something special there in those years. I think that the decade of seventies, from the point of view of ‘History of Hindi Cinema’ was a very important decade since it has many things happening in those years. But since it is subject of a different post I will not go into the detail (which I wish to write) in today’s article here.
Next, I started thinking about the movies which made news or hits or were popular in those years, then the stars, and the directors who ruled the roost and enthral the audiences with their charisma and talent. . . If we look back now on this decade the very first thing that comes to our mind is the rise of Superstardom of Rajesh Khanna. But then in those years I was not the fan of Rajesh Khanna which I became much in the later years of the decade and in the starting years of the eighties.
And the movie watching years those bring back memories for me I think are 1973 (when I was five years old) to 1980 or 1981 to 1982 till I get into tenth standard. These years are very ‘nostalgic’ years for me I think, because many memories of movies and songs for me are from these years. So, what were the specialities of these years – ‘multi starrer movies’, ‘lost and found’ stories, ‘revenge stories’, ‘mythological movies too’, then we have ‘movies with dacoits looting the ‘gaon’ and the poor villagers’, etc. We were not the fan of any actor or actresses, we just loved to watch the movies whatever be the cast.
In my childhood, movies were the biggest entertainment other than outdoor sports, plays, then orchestras, radio and then there were movies. I vaguely remember that I always use to think the stars acting in movies were from a different planet and not like us. Then I used to think how a person who dies in a movie came back again in another movie?😊 And it took me sometime to understand the reality and come to know that the ‘stars’ are actually normal human beings like us.
Movies were the biggest fascination for us then and may be for many like me. From buying tickets for a movie and getting entry into the theatre and then the darkness surrounding gradually and starting the ‘newsreel’ everything was mesmerizing. Sometimes if we got delayed we had to enter in the darkness and then the gate-keeper will come and guide us the way signalling with a torch. And after the ‘newsreel’ (always in black and white 😊) finally the censor certificate of the movie which we eagerly await to the titles of the movie – all fascinating and spellbinding.
Then as I have mentioned earlier we brothers used to collect the cut pieces of films of movies and try to watch them after magnifying from a small mirror (sometimes a piece of mirror) to reflect the sunlight and finally projecting on a piece of cloth (preferably white) in a room which was covered to create darkness even in a daylight outside. I also remember that there was the advertisement for the 16mm projectors in newspapers and magazines which always attracted me and I was always thinking of buying one 😊 (which was not possible and never became possible) 😊.
Reading about movies and stars in print media and discussions about movies and the personal likes and dislikes among friends/groups was almost a routine. And yes, the ‘booklets’ for the songs of the movies, though I don’t remember to have bought many but yes we used to buy them and sing the songs reading from it 😊
Every summer vacation was special and awaited because of movie watching only. It was the main attraction of the vacations as we used to travel to stay with paternal grandparents and cousins would also gather from different places and together we used to watch movies in theatres – ah, how wonderful those were the days!!!
Sometimes on Sundays or a holiday we would even watch back to back movies to utilise the time as we have to travel back to our colony around 25 kms from the district place. The today’s movie we are discussing was passed by the Censor Board on 06.04.1979 and in all possibility, I am sure that I watched it in that ‘summer vacation’ that year. We children were very crazy about watching movies and I think this continued so far till ‘Laawaaris’ (1982) where I remember to get the tickets I joined the long queue which was I think around 500 metres from the ticket window, and it was already on the road where we sat in the queue for a long time 😊.
Recollecting it now all that happened seems to be very crazy and exciting. And I had to share this one incident when I was beaten up by my father as I was disappointed and started shedding tears for not getting ticket to watch a movie as it became house full. The movie was ‘Jaani Dushman’ from 1979. It was directed by Rajkumar Kohli who has given us many multi starrer movies and I have watched many of them viz. ‘Nagin’ (1976), ‘Jaani Dushman’ (1979), ‘Naukar Biwi Ka’ (1983), ‘Raaj Tilak’ (1984), ‘Jeene Nahin Doonga’ (1984), and ‘Insaniyat Ke Dushman’-1987’. After that I think I have not watched any movies from this production house.
At first, for this post I was thinking of a song from a Manmohan Desai movie or a song from a ‘multi starrer movie’, but selected this movie because to watch it I had to first undergo my father’s fury 😊. How is that possible? Was the movie was not for children? Yes, it was not for us – children – then to watch this movie, because it was released with an ‘A’ certificate (released with restricted viewing) 😊. But, I can now guess that may be on my insistence my father may have been somehow agreed to allow us to watch the movie.
However, we could not get the tickets as the show was house full and we – me and my younger brothers were standing watching movie posters – I got disappointed and tears rolled my eyes and the next moment was darkness in front of my eyes because my father had slapped me since I started crying for watching a movie. Later on, my father called me separately and told me to go alone next day to watch the movie and don’t take my younger brothers with me since they will be frightened, as the movie was said to be a ‘HORROR’ movie 😊. Next day I watched the movie and never feel scared while watching the movie, as the movie was making news as a ‘horror’ movie or like that. I was just above eleven years old then 😊.
I don’t remember having watched this movie again after that, either on TV or in theatre. Watching a suspense thriller again doesn’t generate the same interest and thrill. However, I think I should watch it for nostalgia and to enjoy its beautiful songs again. This movie has some very good songs and so far, only two of its songs have been posted on the blog. And when I go through these two posts by Atul ji I find he also had expressed similar feelings about this movie and he had also watched it as a ‘non-adult’, but still he was elder than me then 😊.
The song I present today is a ‘happy song’ to suit our celebration mood and reviving the nostalgia. In the movie too it occurs in celebration after Bindiya Goswami’s marriage and her ‘doli’ not being looted and the ‘dulhan’ not getting killed by the ‘Jaani Dushman’ 😊. The pitcturisation of this song has some typical specialities of that period – the village, the celebration, the grandeur and the music and the multi star cast. . . And over and above all we have Sanjeev Kumar and Shatrughan Sinha in their ‘own style’ 😊 and with so many other artists present in this song. The orchestra music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal makes it very special and nostalgic to revive those memories. . .
So, let us enjoy this song and revive some ‘bhooli bisri yaadein’. . . on this special occasion 😊

“Jaani Dushman”(1979) was produced and directed by Rajkumar Kohli. The movie had received enormous publicity before its release. It was a multistarrer movie, though the stars who mattered to be those days, viz. Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna and Dharmendra did not figure in the movie. The movie had Sunil Dutt, Reena Roy, Jeetendra, Premnath, Shatrughan Sinha, Sanjeev Kumar, Rekha, Amrish Puri, Neetu Singh, Vinod Mehra, Bindiya Goswami, Sarika, Yogita Bali, Vikram, Aruna Irani, Raza Murad, Madan Puri, Sulochana, Shakti Kapoor, Paintal, Jagdeep, Roopesh Kumar, Shobhni Singh, JaiShree T, Indrani Mukherjee, Neeta Metha, Anwar Hussan, Sheetal, Aarti, Maruti, Mac Mohan, Rakesh Roshan, Neeta Mehta etc in it.
