Madan Mohan not only got the best out of Lata, he did that with other singers as well. In fact, he had the knack of getting the best out of every singer he worked with, because he had the ability to guage the range of the singer’s voice and he would tailor his music accordingly. Thus we have singers as varied as Lata, Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh,Talat Mahmood, Asha Bhonsle, Bhupinder etc singing some of their most memorable songs under Madan Mohan.
Another reason why Madan Mohan’s song were so memorable was that he always worked with the most talented lyricists. Kaifi Azmi was not one of the most fashionable lyricists to work with, but Madan Mohan worked with him and churned out some of the most memorable songs one can imagine. The songs of “Haqeeqat” are cases in point.
Here is a song from “Heer Ranjha”. The movie did little of note, but just listen to this song. It is Rafi at his best, Kaifi Azmi at his best, and indeed Madan Mohan at his best. It is a song that I first listened to in 1970s as a young kid, and though the song was not a fashionable song to listen too, even then I liked this song. I say so because this song is very much in my song diary that I used to maintain in 1970s where I would note down the lyrics of the songs that I liked the most.

When I read the words ‘Yeh Duniya’, I first thought of the other Madan Mohan/Rafi song from Chowkidar (1974) called ‘Yeh Duniya Nahin Jagir Kisi Ki’ which remarkably has the same feel in some portions as this Heer Ranjha composition.

Only Madan Mohan had a capacity to add variation in the music. He is my most favorite musician. So sad he died at very young age of 51. We miss musicians like him, Naushad, S.D.Burman, Ravi, Roshan, Gulam Mohammad, so many to list.

S D Burman in his Vividh Bharati programme for servicemen had selected this song and commented- he wished he had composed a song like it!

One of my favourite songs…I have known the full song (all four stanzas) from my childhood.
I rememberr this song used to air quite often on Vividh Bharati.
Any idea how it did on Binaca Geet Mala ? I don’t think it would have done too well. Kishore had pretty much taken over by that time.
