S D Burman is renowned for composing some fantastic boat songs. But I have noted that S D Burman, as well as his son R D were the leading exponents, when it came to creating memorable train songs as well.

There are people who like to go to party. What exactly do they do in the party ? If they are like the party goers in Bollywood songs, most of them just stand like statues when the hero is hogging the limelight, singing a song. Except hero, everyone else seems discomfited. Even the heroine is not at ease, because the contents of the song are either praising her or cursing her, and in either case, she feels mightily embarrassed.

“Ujaala” (1959) was a career defining movie for Shammi Kapoor as well as for Raj Kumar. I have already posted a song from this movie which was picturised on Shammi Kapoor. Here is a song where Raj Kumar is visible, but the song is not sung by him. It is sung by a female ( Kumkum, I think).

Madan Mohan not only got the best out of Lata, he did that with other singers as well. In fact, he had the knack of getting the best out of every singer he worked with, because he had the ability to guage the range of the singer’s voice and he would tailor his music accordingly. I had once wondered what I would do if I run out of all Rafi-Shammi songs. Then I realised that I need not worry. In case I have no more Rafi-Shammi songs to listen to, I always had the option of listening to the songs picturised on Shammi Kapoor clones. And these songs sounded just as good. There was Joy Mukherjee ( similar in appearance to Shammi Kapoor ans sometimes nearly as good) and there was also Vishwajeet ( smaller built and therefore described as poor man’s Shammi Kapoor).

Somehow I feel that “Umrao Jaan” was to Rekha what “Paakeza” was to Meena Kumari. Both these movies were of a similar genre, showing a courtesan singing Mujra in a kotha.

It is a very old song from a movie called “Do bhai” (1947) and this song was sung by Geeta Roy ( later Geeta Dutt). This song made her an overnight sensation.
