Sajjad Hussain, arguably the most original and most creative music director of an era brimming with great music directors, was also a person who was not tactful enough to deal with musically illiterate producers and tended to call a spade a shovel. It was this outspokenness that ensured that he got much less number of assignments than his talent merited.

“Kartavya” (1978) was a Dharmendra-Rekha movie which for some reason has been forgotten, so much so that I have not been able to get my hands on its VCD/DVD despite trying for several weeks.

During my childhood, I got to hear lots of loudspeaker songs ( viz songs blaring out of loudspeakers) where no details of movies, lyrics and music directors were available. Of course that did not prevent one from enjoying these songs. But since these details were not known, one forgot these songs as they stopped being played on loudspeakers.

“Aadmi aur insaan” (1969) had Ravi’s music. When I looked at the list of songs that I have posted from this movie, I found that I had posted just one song, and that too a “lesser” known one. Knowing Ravi, he creates a bagful of hit songs in every movie where he is the music director, many of which have gone on to become iconic songs.

Aankhon mein qayaamat ke kaajal

O P Nayyar, a headstrong music director who ruled the roost for much of 1950s tended to alienate people even close to him. By the time he was creating the music of “Kismat”, he was not on speaking tems with Rafi and so he used the voice of Mahendra Kapoor in the songs of “Kismat”. Mahendra Kapoor was required to sing Rafi style, and he did a competent job of it.
