Tim tim karte taare yoon kahte hain saare

When you need to look for iconic songs on any topic, you should look for songs composed by Ravi. I have noticed that majority of iconic Bollywood songs, whatever be their topics, have been composed by Ravi.

It was Ravi who had composed the first major iconic song for kids, viz “Chanda mama door ke” in Vachan (1955), which was his debut movie. Here , in “Chiraag Kahaan Roshni Kahaan”, he creates another iconic song, and this song is a lullaby song.

Though Prem Dhawan was the lyricist for most songs of this movie, this song was written by Ravi himself. The lyrics are very well written. When it comes to singing, Lata is at her very best. It is easily one of the best lori song that Lata has sung in her long and illustrious career. This song is just as soothing and comforting as the lori song of “Sujata” (1959) which came in the same year and which was sung by Geeta Dutt.

The song is picturised superbly on Meena Kumari and Daisy Irani. The happiness that a mother and child feel in each others company is conveyed superbly in this great great song.

In Bollywood movies, happiness is often followed by sorrow. And so it proves. The kid is taken away from her mother to be brought up in another family. One can well imagine how tortuous this experience cold be for a mother as well as the child to be forcibly separated. and the same song, with sadder tone and lyrics, is sung by the mother to express her helplessness and sorrow.

The same song expresses two different feelings- with several shades of the emotions associated with these feelings. It is not an easy job by any stretch of imagination. Here the creators of the song have passed with flying colours in creating a wonderful song and picturising it superbly. It is a gem of a song- worth listening to, and worth watching.

Lyrics

Happy version
————————-
tim-tim karte taare
yoon kahte hain saare
so jaa tohe sapnon mein nindiyaa pukaare
tim-tim karte taare
yoon kahte hain saare
so jaa tohe sapnon me nindiyaa pukaare
tim-tim karte taare
yoon kahte hain saare

sapnon ke desh ka chandaa maamaa raajaa
sapnon ke desh ka chandaa maamaa raajaa
bulaa rahaa hai bajaa bajaake saat suron kaa baajaa
chori-chori khidki se kare ye ishaare
tim-tim karte taare
yoo kahte hain saare
so jaa tohe sapnon me nindiyaa pukaare
tim-tim karte taare
yoon kahte hain saare

rang-birangi pariyaan tujhe jhoole mein jhulaayengi
rang-birangi pariyaan tujhe jhoole mein jhulaayengi
billi-totaa-mainaa ki kahaani bhi sunaayengi
achchhe-achchhe tujhe khilaune dengi pyaare-pyaare
tim-tim karte taare
yoon kahte hain saare
so jaa tohe sapnon mein nindiyaa pukaare
tim-tim karte taare
yoo kahte hain saare

baadalon ki paalki me munne ko bithaa ke
baadalon ki paalki mein munne ko bithaa ke
chandaa maamaa saaraa jag laayegaa ghumaa ke
laut ke aaye shaan se mera raajaa mere dwaare
tim-tim karte taare
yoo kahte hain saare
so jaa tohe sapnon mein nindiyaa pukaare
tim-tim karte taare
yoon kahte hain saare
hmm hmm hmm hmm

tim-tim karte taare
yoon kahte hain saare
so jaa tohe sapnon mein nindiyaa pukaare
tim-tim karte taare
yoon kahte hain saare

jahaan bhi rahe tu raja rahe khushhaal
aur kyaa duaayen tujhe doon main mere laal
jahaan bhi rahe tu raja rahe khushhaal

jug jug jiyo mere nainon ke ujiyaare
tim-tim karte taare

duniya ne kiya mujhe aisa mazboor
karna hi pada tujhe ankhiyon se door
duniya ne kiya mujhe aisa mazboor
karna hi pada tujhe ankhiyon se door
kuchh bhi zamaana kahe
main hoon teri maan re
tim-tim karte taare

yoon kahte hain saare

I used to sing this lullaby, along with the ones from Sujata and Lajwanti, to my children when they were little. I had forgotten about the sad version of this song, so it was good to see how the lyrics changed the tone of the song completely, from a happy one to a sad one. Thanks, Atul!

Yes, this song is a great achievement for Ravi, seeing that he created the music and wrote the song as well. And indeed Lata’s singing and Meena Kumari’s acting were just out of this world.
