One reason why the songs of the golden era live in our memory is the lyrics which were soul of these songs. Secondly, the singers sand these songs with involvement and passion, and thirdly, the music of these songs created just the right ambience for the mood of the song.
Here is a song from “Shikaar” (1968). I wonder how this song should be classified. Superficially it is a jeep song, and it is a song that expresses the feelings of Dharmendra towards Asha Parekh, but there is more to it. The feelings of discovery, the sense of anticipation, feeling of love and sensuousness in the air, with prospects of sparks ready to fly- all these elements are there in the song. And incredibly, Rafi’s voice conveys all these complex feelings almost effortlessly in this song. It is just mind bogglingly out of this world, really.
Here is this super and superb song from “Shikaar” (1968) which is picturised so delightfully on Dharmendra and Asha Parekh. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist and Shankar Jaikishan composed the music.

Song-Tumhaare pyaar mein ham…Shikaar karne ko aaye shikaar ho ke chale (Shikaar) (1968) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics
tumhaare pyaar mein ham
beqaraar ho ke chale
shikaar karne ko aaye
shikaar ho ke chale
tumhaare pyaar mein ham
beqaraar ho ke chale
shikaar karne ko aaye
shikaar ho ke chale
tumhen kareeb se dekhaa
to dil ko haar diyaa
tumhaari shokh adaa ne
hamen to maar diyaa
tumhaari shokh adaa ne
hamen to maar diyaa
har ek baat pe ham to
nisaar ho ke chale
shikaar karne ko aaye
shikaar ho ke chale
tumhaari aankh mohabbat ki baat kahti hai
tumhen zaroor kisi ki talaash rahti hai
tumhen zaroor kisi ki talaash rahti hai
ye raaz jaan gaye
raazdaar ho ke chale
shikaar karne ko aaye
shikaar ho ke chale
na itna hosh na apni khabar kahaan hain ham
isi kaa naam muhabbat hai ae mere hamdam
isi kaa naam muhabbat hai ae mere hamdam
tumhaare kooche se deewaanaawaar ho ke chale
shikaar karne ko aaye
shikaar ho ke chale
tumhaare pyaar mein ham
beqaraar ho ke chale
shikaar karne ko aaye
shikaar ho ke chale

Atul ji , as rightly described by you this definately is a super song. I would request Sophy to listen it again one or two times and you would also definately find the difference and the magic created by Rafi – Shanker-Jaikishan -Hasrat Jaipuri- of course the handsome looking Dharmendra and Asha Parekh. One of my favorite songs.

I didn’t think the lyrics were all that special. The music is very nice as you say but I didn’t think of it as superlative. Now I will have to pay close attention.
What i just realized is that Asha Parekh shows a lot of restraint. I mean she’s got Dharam all over her and she just plays it so cool. Lucky girl.
