Singer Mukesh, who had become a playback singer by early 1950s was trying to make it big as an actor-singer a la K L Saigal in 1950s. So much so that he began to produce his own movies in which he acted as hero and sang his own songs. But his ventures into movie making ended up in disaster as he not only lost money and ended up on the verge of bankruptcy, his career as a playback singer too almost came to an end because he stopped getting singing assignments from outside movies.
Luckily, he overcame those difficult days and went back to doing what he did best- viz singing songs.
“Anuraag” (1956) was one of the movies that Mukesh produced and acted in (and lost money in). This movie also had Usha Kiran,Mridula,Protima Devi,Shivraj,Umadevi etc in it.
In addition to being the producer and actor, Mukesh sang his songs and composed those songs too.
Here is a song from “Anuraag” (1956). This song is sung by Mukesh who is also the music director. The song is written by Kaif Irfani.
This song, like the movie , has been forgotten. But it must be said that the song is nice to listen to and the song deserves to be better known among music lovers.
Song-Kise yaad rakkhhoon kise bhool jaaun (Anuraag) (1956) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Kaif Irfani, MD-Mukesh
Lyrics
koi dil mein hai aur koi hai nazar mein
muhabbat ke sapne main kispe lutaaun
isi kashmakash mein jiye jaa rahaa hoon
kise yaad rakhoon kise bhool jaaun
kise yaad rakhoon kise bhool jaaun
udhar dil mohabbat mein unko diyaa hai
idhar farz kaa bojh sar pe liyaa hai
ari zindagi toone ye kyaa kiyaa hai
kise yaad rakhoon kise bhool jaaun
na bas mein hai mere inhen bhool jaanaa
na bas mein hai inko nazar se giraanaa
meri bebasi kaa bas itnaa fasaanaa
kise yaad rakhoon kise bhool jaaun
kise yaad rakhoon kise bhool jaaun

listened to this song, a typical Mukesh item, many a time, without realizing which movie it is from, that it was produced and acted by Mukesh himself. I believe Talat Mehmood also had ambitions for acting, but fortunately, gave it up to concentrate on singing. Post Saigal, it seems only Kishore Kumar accomplished it, with a certain amount of success.
