“Waqt” (1965) was the first multi starrer Hindi movie of the golden era. It had several leading stars of the time namely Sunil Dutt,Sadhana,Raj Kumar,Sharmila Tagore,Shashi Kapoor,Balraj sahni,Achla Sachdev etc. The story line, that had the big family of Balraj Sahni separating in an earthquake, only to meet again towards the end, may look hackneyed now, but it was a novelty those days.In fact, it was the story of this movie that led to multi-starrers, as well as lost and found movies of 1970s.
And what about music ! The later movies may have emulated the multi starrer nature of this movie as well as its plot, but few of them have been able to emulate the music of this movie. The music of this movie, to my mind was as big a multi starrer as the star cast. Ravi the music director of this movie, used several singers in this movie, viz Rafi,Manna Dey, Asha Bhonsle, Mahendra Kapoor etc and came up with some immortal compositions.
One of the major reasons for the popularity of the songs of this movie had to be the lyrics that the singers and music director of this movie got to work on. The lyrics are by the one and only Sahir Ludhianvi who broke new grounds of lyrics writing in this movie by comingup with original thiking, viz using a word like “Zohra Zabeen” , in another song, and that song,Ae meri zohra jabeen became a path breaking song. And when it comes to club songs, it is hard to beat the iconic song from this movie which is Aage bhi jaane na tu.
On the occasion of Sahir Ludhianvi’s birthday (8th march),here is another song from this movie. It is a duet sung by Mahendra Kapoor and Asha Bhonsle. It is picturised on Sunil Dutt and Sadhana. And like the other songs from this movie, this song too has gone on to become a timeless classic.

but please clarify one point for me; (any of the knowledgeable people in this forum can help me). is Waqt really the first multi starrer. what was the timeline for “Sikander-e-Azam” and “Anand Math”?

“Kismat” (1943) was the first multi starrer, but I have used the word first multi starrer of the golden era to describe “Waqt”. “Kismat”(1943) was before the golden era.
