Teri zulfon se judaayi to nahin maangi thhi

It is a song that I have heard many a times right from my younger days, and I in fact had noted down the lyrics of this song in a diary that I used to maintain in 1970s. This diary had lyrics of songs noted down by me from radio as well as scorecards of test matches (noted down through radio commentary) that India played those days. 🙂
And all these days I thought that I had already discussed this song in the blog. As has happened with many a times, it has taken farmaishes/ lyrics sent to me my readers etc for the realisation to dawn upon me that many well known and even iconic songs were yet to figure in the blog.
Most music lovers are aware of this song, even if they may not be aware of the movie this song is from. Here is this iconic song from “Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai” (1961). Like most people, I was mainly aware of the audio. Now,I have seen the picturisation too. Now I realise that this song is picturised as a get together song. Asha Parekh and Dev Anand are present in a get together. As is usual in Hindi movies, cold war precedes love, and so it is a case of cold war between Asha Parekh and Dev Anand. In the party, Asha Parekh reads out a sher, and then this song follows.
Any idea whose voice reads the sher ? It could be Lata, but I am not sure.
The song that follows is of course sung by Rafi in his divine voice. Hasrat Jaipuri’s lyrics have gone on to become the stuff of legends. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.
Here is this song, that finally appears in this blog, thanks to nahm sending me the lyrics of this song and thus making me realise that this song was yet to be discussed.

Prelude

is hirs-o-hawas ki duniya mein
armaan badalte dekhe hain
dhokha hai yahaan laalach hai yahaan
imaan badalte dekhe hain
daulat ke sunehre jadoo se
ae dil yeh tadapna achcha hai
chaandi ke khanakte sikkon par
insaan badalte dekhe hain

Teri zulfon se judaayi to nahin maangi thhi
qaid maangi thhi rihaayi to nahin maangi thhi
teri zulfon se judaayi to nahin maangi thhi
qaid maangi thhi rihaayi to nahin maangi thhi
maine kyaa jurm kiyaa aap khafa ho baithhe
maine kyaa jurm kiyaa aap khafa ho baithhe
pyaar maanga thha khudaayi to nahin maangi thhi
qaid maangi thhi rihaayi to nahin maangi thhi
mera haq thha teri aankhon ki chhalakti mai’h par
mera haq thha teri aankhon ki chhalakti mai’h par
cheez apni thhi paraayi to nahin maangi thhi
qaid maangi thhi rihaayi to nahin maangi thhi
apne beemaar pe itna bhi sitam thheek nahin
apne beemaar pe itna bhi sitam thheek nahin
teri ulfat mein buraayi to nahin maangi thhi
qaid maangi thhi rihaayi to nahin maangi thhi
teri zulfon se judaayi to nahin maangi thhi
qaid maangi thhi rihaayi to nahin maangi thhi

True, the cold war precedes love, but in this case, there was love before the cold war too! After about five songs bewtween which they get acquainted, fall in love, Asha ‘realizes’ that he may be not-all-that-he-seems-to-be, and is aloof. So much so that she goes to this party with Pran, and pretends to be pally-pally with him, so as to ‘teach’ Dev.
Yes, the voice does seem amazingly her own. But then, the playback singers make slight vocal changes to sound like the actress for whom they are singing. It is possible that Asha learned a bit of singing; she learned classical dance, according to some article I read a while ago.

In some karaoke versions and discussions, there is mention of a fourth stanza to this lovely song. But I have not heard it in Rafi’s voice ever. It goes like this:
चाहने वालों को कभी, तूने सितम भी ना दिया
चाहने वालों को कभी, तूने सितम भी ना दिया
तेरी महफ़िल से, रुसवाई तो नहीं माँगी थी
क़ैद माँगी थी…
Does anyone have the full version sung by Rafi? Or he never sang it? It’s not in film either as far as I remember.

was thinking of this song today and googled and found the above link. It says it is Lata ji who sang the opening stanzas.

The recital of prelude is Lata Mangeshkar. I was not sure, she starts as if Asha Parekh herself is singing.
daulat ke sunehre jadoo se
ae dil yeh tadapna ‘achcha hai’
This “achcha hai’ is Lata’s signature.
