“Miss Coca Cola” (1955), it turns out , had the same storyline as “Aaya Saawan Jhoom Ke” (1969). Interestingly, “Miss Coca Cola” (1955) flopped miserably, wheras “Aaya Saawan Jhoom Ke” (1969) was a big success at the box office.

“Station Master” (1942) is a very old movie. If one looks at the year, one can see that this movie was released in the same year when Indians passed “Quit India” resolution on their British rulers. Yes, this movie is that old and not much is known about this movie. When one would sit down to list and compile a gold collection of Asha Bhonsle, this ghazal is a ‘must have’ in such a compilation. It is a short ghazal, by many standards. Just three verses, but the words are like sharp stilettos of passion that twist and wrench inside the heart. The composition is fairly simple yet emphatic, and the rendition that sounds apparently casual to start with, carries the words with a resounding conviction – almost a categorical statement of resignation to the wiles of fate. There is a compelling question that the singing voice asks at the end of each verse, and one is forced to absorb and contemplate and empathize and feel the restless, and yet a resigned passion that dominates this poetic expression. What a creation this one is !

The movie had Kishore Kumar, Mumtaz, Sujit Kumar, Laxmi Chhaya, I.S.Johar, Bhagwan,Raj Mehra, Tuntun, Randhir, Leela Misra, Ravikant, Johnny Whisky, Kesri, Krishna Duggal, Gulshan Baawra, Jagadish Bhalla, Aasi, Jerry, Abubakar, Nazir Kashmiri, Sham Laal, Deen Dayaal etc.

I am totally overwhelmed with the response to my first write up. I want to thank Atul ji for posting it almost immediately. Thus encouraged I am now ready to do my second post. What could be the second step after a Lata solo ? No prizes for quessing, it has to be a Rafi solo. Mohammed Rafi solo by O.P.Nayyar to be precise. I would have preferred to have a solo song by S D Burman. I like O.P.Nayyar songs a lot, but S D Burman and Madan Mohan’s songs are my favourites. I have a few song by them lined up for discussion, Atul ji permitting.

“Aarti” (1962) was one of the first (if not the first) movie of Rajshree Productions. It was directed by Phani Majumdar. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Meena Kumari, Pradeep Kumar, Shashikala, Peace Kanwal, Jagirdar, Rajendranath, Vijaya Choudhry, Surekha, Niranjan Sharma, Ramesh Deo, Chandrima Bhaduri, Keshto Mukherjee etc in it. That sounds like quite an impressive starcast, though quite a few of them were newcomers at that time.

Hindi movie songs cover lots of ground as far as depicting various human feelings as well as activities of Indians are concerned. But there are still a few regular activities that have been sadly underrepresented. For instance, there are hardly any songs for an activity as common as buying and selling of vegetables.

In 1950s, we had a genre of songs where a lady, alone or accompanied by other co workers carrying basket on her head would be going on her way to her work while singing a song. The hero and heroine would be at hand to listen to the song. The song in a way would express the feelings that the leading duo have for each other but are too shy to express themselves. alternatively the song may set the tone for the movie. Such a song is there in “Aar Paar” (Kabhi aar kabhi paar ),”Do Aankhen Barah Haath” (Sainya jhoothon ka bada sartaaj nikla), CID (Boojh mera kyaa naam re ) etc. I am trying to think of a name that describes such songs, but I am unable to find an appropriate descriptive name for such a genre of songs. I request our readers to help out in suggesting a name for such songs.

Khursheed Bano ( 14/04/1914 – 18/04/2001), the singer of immortal songs such as “panchhi baawara chaand se preet lagaaye” , “ghataa ghanghor ghor” , “jiske milne ki tamanna thhi wo pyaara mil gayaa” was born as Irshad Begum near Lahore on April 14, 1914. She became an actor at a time when the era of silent movie was about to end. In the advent of talkie films when actors had to sing their own songs, she had to learn singing in furtherance of her acting career. In one of her interviews, she said that it was because of the painstaking efforts by music directors of that time that some of the actors like her could improve their singing skills.

“Jhuk Gaya Aasmaan” (1968) was an R D B Production. It was directed by Lekh Tandon. The starcast had Rajendra Kumar, Saira Banu, Prem Chopra,Rajendranath, Parveen Choudhary, Jagirdar, Randhir, Jagdish Raaj, Sulochana, Chaman Puri, Kamal Kapoor, Madhumati, David Abraham, Durga Khote, Hari Shivdasani etc in it.
